Principal’s Report
Dear Parents/Caregivers
Our vision is to foster every individual’s academic and social development driven by high expectations for success and aspirations for them to become resilient, respectful individuals. We want this to happen within a safe, supportive learning environment that caters for the present and developmental needs of every student.
We are halfway through the term and the weather is cooling. Please continue to maintain good hygiene practices to ensure sickness is not spread. It is important that if your child is absent from school, you notify the school of their absence. This can be done via text message, Seesaw message, a phone call to the office or email.
Reconciliation Week
On Friday 26th May, Mr Gane, Mrs Brown and their students marked the commemoration of National Sorry Day and the start of Reconciliation Week with our school assembly. We continue to focus on working on our Reconciliation Action Plans - this year a focus on collaborating with our Clarkson cluster schools, enhancing our community engagement.
School Environment
Our classroom doors open at 8:30am. If students arrive before 8:30am they are expected to sit in the undercover area. Staff monitor the area from 8:15am. Please note that prior to 8:15am staff are not on duty. The end of the school day is 2:45pm. Students and families are expected to leave school grounds straight after school. Our Cleaners busily try to clean our school at the end of the day, and this includes our playgrounds. It would be helpful to them if families could leave the grounds as early as possible. Theircare Before and After School Care use the playgrounds as part of their areas. Thank you for your consideration of this matter. There is a playground in the park opposite the school that is a better location for families to gather.
Thank you to all families who have organised their parking arrangements since the changes at the start of this term. As a month has now passed, the City of Wanneroo will be issuing infringements to those who do not comply with the parking restrictions. Please be mindful of this and ensure you park safely and in compliance with the Regulations.
Western Australia Day
A reminder that Monday 5th June is the WA Day public holiday.
Thank you to Mrs Hill for organising WA Day packs for students to complete throughout the week, together with some literacy activities based on the theme.

As Mrs Hadley-Hawley takes maternity leave, I will continue as Acting Principal for Term 3 2023. Whilst I am in the position of Principal for Term 3, Miss Heather Barnwall, will continue as Deputy Principal.
A message from Mrs Zoe Hadley-Hawley
Dear Somerly Community and Staff
It is with a massive range of emotions that I share with you, I will not be returning to Somerly Primary School for the remainder of the 2023 and 2024 school years. I was granted leave for this period following the birth of my youngest daughter.
This was a decision that was not easy and came after many months of weighing up all the options available to me and considering my changed family circumstances. After having some time off with my family, I know that returning to fulltime work is not possible for me at this stage. In considering the best interest of the operational needs of the school and community, I have committed to this leave to allow some certainty and stability through the longer-term appointment of an Acting Principal.
I have been at Somerly Primary School since it opened, in many roles. I have numerous treasured memories and have gained a vast array of experiences.
As I continue to enjoy my parental leave, including coaching my daughters’ netball teams, being a school mum and looking after my gorgeous happy little baby, I wish you all the best for the remainder of the year. I am sending wishes of health and happiness to you and your families.
Sincerely yours
Mrs Zoe Hadley-Hawley
Consent2Go
We are excited to announce that we will soon be offering our families Consent2Go, a digital solution that easily enables you to keep your child’s health records accurate and provide consent for school events, excursions and camps in a secure and timely manner.
We are always looking for ways to enhance our student care and after careful evaluation of our requirements and of providers in the market, we have made the decision to use Consent2Go.
Consent2Go is a direct provider of services to the school and as such is required to comply with our Privacy Policy.
Consent2Go is used in many other schools across Australia and New Zealand and is proven to be highly effective.
Why are we changing?
For student safety it is vital that their information is as up to date as possible and complies with government regulations, the processes we currently use to support this are complex and time consuming for all involved and we have been looking for a superior solution.
Consent2Go will replace our current paper process and will be the channel that informs you about school incursions, excursions and camps, allows you to provide your consent and be the collection point for student health information.
It has an easy-to-use parent interface, including a parent app and I’m confident you will find it a much easier process for your child/children.
When will this change occur?
We are working through our implementation schedule currently and are looking to introduce the new system in the very near future. We will contact you again closer to this time and provide you with further instructions on using the new system.
New students
I would like to extend a warm welcome to Aston who recently commenced at Somerly Primary School.

Learning Focus
Room 5 – Year 1
Room 5's Year 1 students have been learning about information report writing. They have recently spent time writing a report, with some teacher-help, on frogs. Please enjoy their lovely pictures!

Physical Education
On Friday 26th of May our Year 5/6 students participated in the Lightning Carnival. This included Volleyball, Tag Rugby, AFL and Speedball hosted amongst schools in our sporting network. Our teams gave their top effort, and we had some great results such as Rugby finishing 2nd overall, AFL 4th (Boys)/5th (Girls), Speedball 5th (Girls)/10th (Boys), Volleyball 7th overall.
The great thing to see was students enjoying being active and part of a team environment with their friends. Thanks to all our staff for the preparation and effort they put into this event. We appreciate your help! Also special thanks to our Somerly Primary School mums Tania and Kelli with their help in the running of the AFL Carnival at Somerly Primary School!
Waste Wise Schools
Gardening Club
Gardening Club continues to run on Mondays and Wednesdays during lunch times. Our Year 1-3 students have been busy weeding our garden bed so we can plant new seedlings. On Monday we planted some more corn.

Don’t feed the fill!
This week we will be continuing with our Kindergarten and PLP Barnyard Farm incursion to help raise money to support our parents with the costs of the incursion.
So far this year we have collected 15253 containers
from going to landfill.
Our term goal is to get to 20000
containers!
This week we will continue to have our Zooper
Dooper Thursday!
So please continue to bring in your 10 containers!
Shout out!
We are looking for some local small businesses to support our Containers for Change fundraising so please parents and carers, if you know of any small businesses that could support our fundraising by donating their containers, please let us know.
Thank you for helping us to help you!
Waste Sorted Schools
Thank you, Waste Sorted Schools!
Somerly Primary School was a recipient of a Waste Sorted Schools Grant to continue our commitment to waste avoidance and resource recovery. This project is supported by the Government of Western Australia and administered by the Waste Authority.
A grant of $1845.80 was approved for funding from the Waste Authority to Somerly Primary School to purchase yellow and red wheelie bins and red bin lids to build on existing recycling and waste stream sorting.
The yellow wheelie bins were allocated to each classroom and are used to support our Containers for Change schemes. All containers are now placed in the classrooms and emptied into large bail bins supplied by The Good Sammy’s, who pick them up fortnightly.
We have forged a relationship with the Good Sammy’s Wanneroo to continue our support of our local community.
Three full red bins were allocated to the early childhood teaching blocks to assist our younger students with identifying the correct general rubbish bin. The red lids were allocated to all existing general rubbish bins to upscale and provide a more visually enhanced general bin throughout our school.
Once again thank you to Waste Sorted Schools for helping us with our waste management schemes.

This project is supported by the Government of Western Australia and adminitered by the Waste Authority
