Principal’s Report

Dear Parents/Caregivers

Our vision is to foster every individual’s academic and social development driven by high expectations for success and aspirations for them to become resilient, respectful individuals. We want this to happen within a safe, supportive learning environment that caters for the present and developmental needs of every student.

Thank you for a great start to the term, we are now in week 4 and busily working to achieve set goals. Students are enjoying their lunchtime activity clubs, some run by staff and others by our Student Leadership Team. Teachers are planning lessons to engage students in their learning, so it is important that your child has regular attendance to ensure they achieve their potential.

Last Friday, we were honoured to have a group of Somerly Primary School students participate in the Interschool Cross Country. These students proudly represented Somerly Primary School, demonstrating good sportsmanship and did their best to achieve their results. Thank you to Mrs Ochieng, Mr Robinson and Ms Sanders for supporting our students with this event.

This Friday, we have Room 11 presenting their assembly. It is also an opportunity to celebrate P&C Day and acknowledge our dedicated P&C team. We thank the P&C for the amazing things they do for our school community. Last term they paid for the dancing sessions for Harmony Week, purchased some toys for the Early Childhood play areas, raised funds through Dominoes Pizza Day and organised the P&C Fun Run. Through the funds raised by the P&C, our school will be able to fund:

  • New take home reading books
  • A long jump pit to be installed on our grounds.
  • Two four square patterns in our senior block areas
  • A selection of furniture for our classroom calming spaces
  • A donation to our NAIDOC excursion

The P&C is continuing to raise funds to ensure improvement to our school environment. We thank them for their efforts in fundraising.

They also support other initiatives in our school community:

  • Breakfast Club
  • Sausage sizzle lunches
  • Wastewise: Containers for Change
  • The Fathering Project

The P&C always welcomes new members, so please feel free to approach a P&C representative to see how you can join.

24th May - National Simultaneous Storytime

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Somerly Primary School will be joining in this event with Mrs Lawrence hosting the event in our library. It is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6. This year NSS takes place on Wednesday 24 May 2023 at 11:00am and we would love it if you could join in and register to watch the online live reading of the book.

Lightning Carnival

On Friday 26th May, our years 5 & 6 students will be participating in the Interschool Lightning Carnival. Please ensure your child’s permission slip and payment has been returned. All Years 5 & 6 students have been training during their senior sport sessions to prepare for their sport. Students will travel to various schools to compete in their sport.

  • Quinns Rocks Primary School - Volleyball
  • Beaumaris Primary School - Girls AFL
  • Kinross Primary School - Rugby
  • Mindarie Primary School - Speedball
  • Somerly Primary School - Boys AFL

I wish them the best of luck, and hope they enjoy the day.

School Environment

Our classroom doors open at 8:30am, if student arrive before 8:30am they are expected to sit in the undercover area. Staff monitor the area from 8:15am, please note prior to 8:15am, staff are not on duty. The end of the school day is 2:45, students and families are expected to leave school grounds after school. There is a playground in the park opposite the school that is a better location for families to gather. Our Cleaners busily try to clean our school at the end of the day, and this includes our playgrounds. It would be helpful to them if families leave the school grounds as early as possible. Thank you for your consideration with this matter.

Enrolments for 2024

Interschool Cross Country

On Friday 12th May, 40 students from Somerly Primary School attended the Interschool Cross Country event hosted by Quinns Rocks Primary School. The course was 1km for year 3 students, 1.5km for years 4 and 5 students and 2km for year 6 students with the course located around the ovals of Gumblossom Park. We were impressed by the courage of our students as they pushed themselves to complete the course. Thank you to Ms Sanders and Mr Robinson for their help on the day and well done to all students involved.

Pre-Primary Mother’s Day Event

Our Pre-Primary classes, Rooms 1 and 2 hosted a Mother’s Day/Special Person’s Event.

It was a successful event with a lot of positive feedback from our little people and their special big people.

Together they enjoyed reading a book, decorating a cookie, tracing and colouring each other’s hand, being pampered with a hand sugar scrub and having their portrait painted by their special little person. There were smiles all round.

Thank you to all attendees, Deputy Principals and our wonderful Education Assistants for helping make this event happen.

Learning Focus

Art Class Updates

Year 4 Art Classes:

This term students in year 4 have been busy working towards their Arts Assembly project. This has involved students researching Traditional Bongo Drums and learning how to firstly sketch them followed by etching them into a Poly block, whilst learning about the artistic printing process. Students have experimented with creating smooth gradient backgrounds using acrylic paints and have already created some beautiful backing pieces in preparation for the special assembly.

Year 6 Art Classes:

Year 6 students have been busy learning how to mix their own Tertiary Colour wheel colours and with this new learnt skill have created a Tertiary Colour wheel eye painting. Be sure to check out the display in the school's front office to see what our marvellous year 6 students have created. This project involved students experimenting with colour theory and mixing primary and secondary acrylic paint colours together to create a tertiary colour.
