Principal’s Report

Dear Parents/Caregivers

OUR SCHOOL VISION IS TO SUPPORT STUDENTS IN BECOMING STRONG, THOUGHTFUL AND INDEPENDENT INDIVIDUALS WHO ASPIRE TO BE THE BEST THAT THEY CAN BE. OUR ETHOS OFFERS STUDENT CENTERED EDUCATION THAT IS FOCUSSED ON BOTH THE PRESENT AND DEVELOPMENTAL NEEDS OF STUDENTS.

Term 1

As Term 1 ends, it is time to reflect on the amazingly busy term we have enjoyed. Our Kindergarten students started their first year of schooling, this is a big milestone for families. Thank you to our Kindergarten staff for all you do to support our families. Pre-Primary to Year Six students participated and enjoyed their school swimming lessons, and as a whole school we celebrated Harmony Week. Students were also busy learning, Pre-Primary to Year 2 students completed their on-entry assessments, Years 3 & 5 students completed their NAPLAN testing and teachers and parents had an opportunity to meet and discuss the children’s interests and progress. Thank you to Miss Barnwall for her organisation with swimming and NAPLAN and thank you to all our staff who supported these events. We also continued with our intervention programs for English and Maths, which has resulted in successful improvements for our students, thank you to our Education Assistants who are dedicated to this role. Our Student Leadership Team have splendidly hosted assemblies, maintained responsibilities around the school and have organised fun activity clubs for lunchtime, keeping students actively engaged during the break.

The Waste Wise/Containers for Change program has been extremely successful, thanks to the ongoing energy from Ms Sanders. We are now in partnership with Good Sammy’s, who have assisted with the collection of the cans. 20% of our funds assist their community program. The P&C are involved in the coordination of this partnership. We look forward to continuing this program and seeing the benefits for our community.

Voluntary Contributions

Voluntary Contributions play a significant role in providing resources for students in the classroom. The continuing partnership between the school and parents is vital to ensuring that all students receive a level of education sufficient to carry them forward in today’s society. Voluntary Contributions are utilized to purchase books, resources and equipment for classroom use and to support our school in the delivery of quality educational programmes. To enable the school to continue to deliver our excellent educational programmes, we urge you to consider paying your Voluntary Contribution at your earliest convenience.

Voluntary Contributions for 2023 is set at $60. However, if you pay before the end of Term 1, you will receive a discount of $10.

Uniform Donations

If you are cleaning out your old school uniforms, please note that we always welcome donations of second-hand uniform. We use these uniforms to support families in need and for students who may need them for various reasons throughout the school day. Donations can be brought to the front office.

Dogs on School Grounds

Dogs are wonderful pets; however, like children they require care, education, and restraint. Some of our staff and students have an aversion to dogs while others have an allergy associated with dogs. Please support these students and refrain from bringing your dog onto school grounds.

Learning Focus

SCIENCE

In Term One, students have been studying Physical Sciences, they have been developing their understanding of forces and energy in this subject area and beginning to develop their Science Inquiry Skills by explicitly learning about how to pose a testable question and how to make a prediction or hypothesis. We have also started to discuss variables and how to make a test fair.

The topics for each year level have varied with students learning about pushes and pulls, friction and gravity, light and sound and energy transformation and transfer. Each year group developed their understanding through hands on experiments, whether it was building simple machines that use pushes and pulls or creating simple electric circuits everyone had a great time exploring and learning about physics.

Year 6 students make a simple circuit

Gardening Club

Over the last week we have been harvesting and planting some new seasonal vegetables. We are currently planting pumpkin, cabbage, potato and leeks which will be ready to harvest in our cooler months, leading into winter. These ingredients will be used to make an assortment of fresh soups. We have also been working hard to produce our own garden compost.

Don’t feed the fill!

Shout out!

We are looking for some local small businesses to support our Containers for Change fundraising so, please parents and carers, if you know of any small businesses that could support our fundraising by donating their containers, please let us know.

Thank you for helping us to help you!

Thank you, Waste Sorted Schools!

Somerly Primary School was a recipient of a Waste Sorted Schools Grant to continue our commitment to waste avoidance and resource recovery. This project is supported by the Government of Western Australia and administered by the Waste Authority.

A grant of $1,845.80 was approved from the Waste Authority to Somerly Primary School to purchase yellow and red wheelie bins and red bin lids to build on existing recycling and waste stream sorting.

The yellow wheelie bins have been allocated to each classroom and are used to support our Containers for Change schemes. All containers are now placed in the classrooms and emptied into large bail bins supplied by Good Sammy’s, who also pick them up fortnightly.

We have forged a relationship with Good Sammy’s, Wanneroo to continue our support of our local community.

Three full red bins were allocated to the Early Childhood blocks to assist our younger students with identifying the correct general rubbish bin. The red lids were allocated to all existing general rubbish bins to upscale and provide a more visual, enhanced general bin throughout our school.

Once again thank you to Waste Sorted Schools for helping us with our waste management schemes.
