Principal’s Report
Dear Parents/Caregivers
OUR SCHOOL VISION IS TO SUPPORT STUDENTS IN BECOMING STRONG, THOUGHTFUL AND INDEPENDENT INDIVIDUALS WHO ASPIRE TO BE THE BEST THAT THEY CAN BE. OUR ETHOS OFFERS STUDENT CENTERED EDUCATION THAT IS FOCUSSED ON BOTH THE PRESENT AND DEVELOPMENTAL NEEDS OF STUDENTS.
I hope everyone is feeling well, as we are in the middle of the Kambarang season, which brings an abundance of flowers and warming temperatures. As a Sun Smart school, students are required to wear our school hat (black bucket hat) when playing outside. Students without a hat can play in the shade. School hats can be purchased from the front office for a cost of $5.
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce and welcome our new Deputy Principal, Miss Heather Barnwall to our Somerly Primary school community. As you see her around the school, please take a moment to say hello and welcome her to our school. Heather will be working at Somerly Primary School until the end of Term 1 2023.
Kindy Assembly
It was lovely to see our young Kindergarten students present their first assembly item on Friday 11th November and Monday 14th November. How impressive they were singing “Old McDonald Had a Farm” without the use of background music. Thank you to our dedicated Kindergarten staff, who encouraged all students to participate.
Remembrance Day
During the week our students discussed the importance of Remembrance Day and each class created a poppy wreath. During the assembly on Friday 11th November, we acknowledged Remembrance Day, as a representative from each class laid their class wreath at the flag pole. Our School Board Chair, Arthur Ventham, addressed our school assembly about Remembrance Day and at 11am the school observed a minute’s silence.
Our Student Councillors, Mr Ventham and myself attended Cambrai Village Remembrance Day Service. We had the privilege of laying wreaths on behalf of our school community. This was a very significant and memorable event for our Student Councillors.

Student Leadership for 2023
Our current Student Leadership Team had the opportunity to speak to our Year 5 students last week, reflecting on their journey as part of the Student Leadership Team. This week, students in Year 5, had the opportunity to nominate for leadership positions next year. Students nominating for Student Councillor or Faction Captains will be presenting a persuasive speech to our Year 3–6 audience on Friday 18th November.
School Board
The final School Board meeting of the year will be held on Tuesday 22nd November at 9am. Minutes from the meetings are available to read upon request.
2023 Planning and Student Placement
We are in the complex process of planning for 2023 class structures. It is important that detailed and accurate information is completed so that we have enough staff for the commencement of the school year. If you are leaving Somerly Primary School and have not yet advised us, please do so as soon as possible.
Planning classes for 2023 is no easy task and staff spend considerable time and effort to ensure suitable placements, balancing every individual student’s needs, including academic, social, emotional, and behavioural. I do ask that if you have a specific requirements or considerations that you, please put this in writing to myself, as soon as possible. Please note that all requests will be considered but cannot be guaranteed.
P&C
Our school P&C will be meeting on Tuesday 22nd November. If you would like to attend or join the P&C, all are welcome. The meeting will begin at 6:30pm in the staffroom.
New students
I would like to extend a warm welcome to Avneen who recently commenced at Somerly Primary School.

Students Late to School
If your child arrives late to school, they are missing critical morning routines and learning activities. The school day begins at 8:40am and students will be considered late if they do not arrive by this time. If your child arrives after 9:00am you are required to enter through the front office and provide us with a reason for the lateness. A late slip will be printed for you to give to the class teacher.
Not Feeling Well?
If your child is not feeling well before school, please keep them home and notify the office by phoning 6206 4200, sending an SMS to 0437 480 486 or emailing somerly.ps@education.wa.edu.au.
Late Collection of Students
Somerly Primary School has a student finish time of 2.45pm each day. If your child has not been picked up before 3pm, you will be required to come to the front office to sign them out.
Remembrance Day Service
For Remembrance Day, selected Student Councillors had the privilege of attending a special Remembrance Day event held at Cambrai Village. At the beginning, we were handed a program of the ceremony. The Chaplain spoke about the special day and then invited people to lay wreaths and memorial crosses. When it was Somerly Primary School’s turn, Maddy and Mrs Carroll laid the crosses. Paige and Taj then went and laid wreaths. At the end of the day, we started singing the National Anthem. Following the vent, we went to have lunch. We had a sausage sizzle and chips. It was a great day! The Student Councillors felt such a privilege to be invited to this special day.
