Principal’s Report
Dear Parents/Caregivers
OUR SCHOOL VISION IS TO SUPPORT STUDENTS IN BECOMING STRONG, THOUGHTFUL AND INDEPENDENT INDIVIDUALS WHO ASPIRE TO BE THE BEST THAT THEY CAN BE. OUR ETHOS OFFERS STUDENT CENTERED EDUCATION THAT IS FOCUSSED ON BOTH THE PRESENT AND DEVELOPMENTAL NEEDS OF STUDENTS.
P&C
On Tuesday 10th May we were able to hold our second successful P&C meeting of the year with a great number of parent representatives. We look forward to more parents being in attendance at the next meeting.
A calendar of P&C events for the year were pencilled in, including Year 6 Sausage Sizzles, a school disco, a Father’s Day stall, amongst other events. The Year 6 parent representative has managed to secure a date for a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle on the 3rd July to raise funds for Year 6 camp. Be on the lookout for more details of how you can help.
Friday 20th May is P&C Day and the school has organised a P&C Thank You Afternoon Tea. This is an opportunity to acknowledge our P&C for all they do in our community. I am so excited by the renewed strength and enthusiasm for the P&C and I encourage all parents to come along to our next meeting which will be held in Week 7 on Tuesday 7th June at 6.30pm in the staff room.
COVID 19
It has been fantastic having parents and community members back in the school and I hope you have also enjoyed it. It was lovely having all our mums and mother figures at school to celebrate with our Kindergarten students for Mother’s Day.
Despite easing restrictions, the school is still facing some challenges in obtaining relief staff. The school is doing everything we can to ensure we maintain face to face learning programs in every classroom, every day. However, unfortunately the relief staff shortage is system wide and as a last resort we have on occasion found it necessary to cancel specialist programs and/or collapse classes.
The school has been given 20 RAT tests per student. Students in Kindergarten and Pre-primary will be able to collect these from their classroom teachers at pick up. Parents of Years 1 – 6 students will be able to collect their RAT tests between 2.30pm to 3pm from Wednesday to Friday. Tables will be set up in the individual teaching block alcoves.
Before and After School Play
With the easing of restrictions, it is lovely to be able to have the playgrounds open after school for play. We do ask that you continue to supervise your children in these areas to ensure they are being respectful, responsible and safe.
Before school however, playgrounds will remain closed and this includes the early childhood area. For safety and supervision reasons, we ask that all students please move to the quadrangle/undercover area if they are unaccompanied by an adult. All students should be arriving between 8.15am and 8.40am with classroom doors open for learning at 8.30am. Students arriving at 8.30am are provided with the opportunity to organise themselves for the day ahead and review previously learnt content. We thank you for your support with ensuring students are not arriving prior to 8.15am.
New students
I would like to extend a warm welcome to Makai, Anna-Rose, Austin, Jada, Kai and Sabrina who recently commenced at Somerly Primary School.

Students Late to School
If your child arrives late to school, they are missing critical morning routines and learning activities. The school day begins at 8:40am and students will be considered late if they do not arrive by this time. If your child arrives after 9:00am you are required to enter through the front office and provide us with a reason for the lateness. A late slip will be printed for you to give to the class teacher.
Not Feeling Well?
If your child is not feeling well before school, please keep them home and notify the office by phoning 6206 4200, sending an SMS to 0437 480 486 or emailing somerly.ps@education.wa.edu.au.
Late Collection of Students
Somerly Primary School has a student finish time of 2.45pm each day. If your child has not been picked up before 3pm, you will be required to come to the front office to sign them out.
Learning Focus
Art
This Term in Art, the Pre-Primary students have been exploring the Element of ‘Texture’. Students have created their own textured clay fish which firstly they sketched a design of, including different lines styles, chose warm and cool colours and continued to mould and etch into their clay piece to create their own fish. The next step will be to paint the fish using acrylic paints. The students have worked so hard on this project, and I can’t wait to see the final projects.

The year 6 students have been busy creating some watercolour paintings inspired by Spanish Artist Okuda San Miguel. Students began their projects learning how to sketch the facial features of a lion head and continued to divide the head into geometric shapes, influenced by the Spanish Artist’s modern style. The final steps included applying watercolour paints and outlining with permanent marker to create bold straight lines. Watch this space for the lion instalment coming to you soon.

Gardening Club
This term, students continue to come to gardening club in block rotations, this ensures that each student achieves quality time in the garden. We have some students planting seeds, watering garden beds and pulling weeds and general maintenance of the garden. We have now planted various vegetable and herbs in our garden such as broccoli, cauliflower, brown onions, red onions, basil, mint, oregano, chives, carrots, mixed lettuce, peas, cabbage and spinach.
We also recently harvested some mixed lettuce, mint and spinach. They were made into little fresh bags and given out to our parents at our last assembly. We are hoping to harvest some more for this coming assembly.

Thank you staff, students and our families for continuing to support our Containers for Change challenges, raising money for our community and our students.

Healthy Food Week
From the 2021 Health and Wellbeing Census that was given to the Year 4 – 6 students, it was identified that students found it difficult to identify a healthy food choice. From this Census the 2022 Health Committee are organising events throughout the year to specifically focus on the needs of the students.
During Week 6 students will be encouraged to bring healthy food options and will learn about making positive eating choices. As we are a ‘Crunch and Sip’ school, it is a reminder that students can bring in a piece of fruit or vegetable along with their drink bottle. Teachers will set time aside each day for students to have a break from their school work and take a moment to eat their healthy snacks. To celebrate the week students will participate in fun and engaging lessons. The Health Committee looks forward to seeing all the yummy, healthy snacks.
P&C Day - 20th May
On Friday 20th May we celebrate P&C Day and we say THANK YOU to the Somerly Primary School P&C for contributing so much to our school. P&C volunteers are a shining light within school communities, their dedication and passion help to provide our students with the excellent educational journey they deserve.
