Principal’s Report
Dear Parents/Caregivers
OUR SCHOOL VISION IS TO SUPPORT STUDENTS IN BECOMING STRONG, THOUGHTFUL AND INDEPENDENT INDIVIDUALS WHO ASPIRE TO BE THE BEST THAT THEY CAN BE. OUR ETHOS OFFERS STUDENT CENTERED EDUCATION THAT IS FOCUSSED ON BOTH THE PRESENT AND DEVELOPMENTAL NEEDS OF STUDENTS.
ANZAC DAY
Like many events this year we have had to modify our school ANZAC service. We will still hold our school ANZAC service but we have postponed this until Term 2 Friday 29th April.
The ANZAC service will be a smaller service than what we traditionally hold but with the new protocols all students and staff will be able to be in attendance.
Term 2
Term 2 would normally start with a professional development day for staff, however this term students and staff will all commence on Tuesday 26th April 2022. On Friday 20th May staff were due to participate in a school network professional development day. This event has been cancelled due to COVID so this day will become our staff professional learning day. Therefore, there will be no school for students on this day.
PP – Year 4 Swimming Lessons - Cancelled
In weeks 1 and 2 of Term 2, PP to Year 4 students were due to complete their in-term swimming lessons. Unfortunately, due to various factors, the difficult decision has been made to cancel in-term swimming. There are significant challenges presented by COVID, including student attendance and separating class groups resulting in the need for an increased number of buses and increased costs.
Due to the number of schools cancelling swimming at this time it is unlikely we will be able to postpone to later in the year. We apologise for the inconvenience.
Winter School Uniform
As the cold weather approaches please ensure your child has the appropriate school uniform. School uniform is available from Uniform Concepts in Clarkson. Students will not be permitted to wear hoodies.
COVID 19 Vaccination for Children
Reflection
As we head into the holidays, it is a great time to reflect on what has been a rollercoaster of a ride with the school certainly having to face its fair share of COVID cases. Despite this, students have been working hard in their classes and we have successfully run five intervention programs in English and Mathematics. The Waste Wise/Containers for Change program has been extremely successful, the students have participated in Harmony Day activities including our Taiko Drumming Incursion and the Year 5 and 6 students completed their in-term swimming program at Yanchep Lagoon.
I would like to acknowledge our new Kindy and Pre-primary families for what has been a difficult time. Not being able to drop off children in classrooms has been difficult for students and families and we are so proud of the independence and resilience they have shown. I would also like to thank all staff, students, parents and the wider community for your support throughout this term and I hope you all have a restful and relaxing holiday break.
New students
I would like to extend a warm welcome to Nathan and Lorenzo who recently commenced at Somerly Primary School.

Students Late to School

The school day begins at 8:40am and students will be considered late if they do not arrive by this time. If your child arrives after 9:00am you are required to enter through the front office and provide us with a reason for the lateness. A late slip will be printed for you to give to the class teacher.

Photo Catch Up Day Change
3P Photography were due to carry out a catch up day for student photos on Thursday 7th April, but unfortunately due to staffing issues, they have had to reschedule this to Friday 8th April. Any students that missed out on having their photo taken are able to go along to the undercover area between 8.30 and 9.30am on Friday morning. The photographer will also take sibling photos, if required.

Learning Focus
Science
With 2022 seeing the introduction of Science as a specialist subject there was always going to be a lot of new and exciting things to discover.
This term all students have been studying Biological Sciences. Whether it was exploring the features of mini beasts, including snails, worms and ants; investigating the life cycles of mealworms and flowering plants; dissecting lilies; learning how to classify and care for living things or developing irrigations systems to reduce salinity, all students have been immersed in a hands-on and engaging experience.
We have also had some amazing and inspiring discussions about bees and their importance and how climate change is leading to the extinction of the world’s plants and animals.

Next term we begin Physical Sciences in the brand-new Science room, which is currently under construction and due to be completed for Term Two. I cannot wait to continue to grow this specialist area and watch our students develop their science skills.

Ramadan
To celebrate Ramadan in our class we made lanterns as decorations. We wrote about how we could help the less fortunate and what we are grateful for.
