Principal’s Report

Dear Parents/Caregivers

OUR SCHOOL VISION IS TO SUPPORT STUDENTS IN BECOMING STRONG, THOUGHTFUL AND INDEPENDENT INDIVIDUALS WHO ASPIRE TO BE THE BEST THAT THEY CAN BE. OUR ETHOS OFFERS STUDENT CENTERED EDUCATION THAT IS FOCUSSED ON BOTH THE PRESENT AND DEVELOPMENTAL NEEDS OF STUDENTS.

End of Year Events

We will be holding a number of special events over the next few weeks as we come to the end of the year:

  • Book Award Assembly – Friday 10th December, 8.50am. Parents of students receiving an award have been sent letters in the post this week.
  • Graduation - Wednesday 15th December 9am. Students from Year 3 to 6 will be in attendance as well as families of graduating students and special guests.
  • Christmas Concert – Thursday 16th December 8.50am. All classes will present an item at this fun end of year event.

Semester 2 Student Reports

This is a reminder that the Semester Two student reports will be emailed out to families on Monday 13th December. It is extremely important if you have recently changed your email address to please inform the front office as soon as possible. Without the updated details you will not receive your child/children’s reports. This is also a reminder that the link for the student reports only lasts for 4 weeks, they need to be downloaded and saved for future reference.

Class Lists and Transition Afternoon

2022 class lists are currently being drafted and reviewed and will be published on Monday 13th December from 2.30pm. Class lists will be displayed on the windows of the library.

Students will also engage in our transition afternoon on Wednesday 15th December from 1.45pm. The transition afternoon is an opportunity for all students to move to their new classrooms for the following year and where possible meet their teachers. The aim of these transition sessions is to help students adjust and alleviate some anxieties prior to returning to school. Transitioning to a new class, away from friends can be an anxious and sometimes even upsetting time for students. Take some time to reassure your child that they will get to play with all their friends at play times and a new class will allow them to make new friends.

It is important to remember that a lot of thought and detail go in to class placements. We endeavour to have balanced classes and consider the needs of all students. For 2022 we have several split classes because of the distribution of student numbers in different year levels. If your child is placed into a split class, it is important to remember that they will not miss any curriculum, they will be taught the curriculum for their year level. Teachers are provided with collaborative time to ensure consistency across year levels and like in any class, differentiate to the needs of their students.

Building Works Update

It is with some relief and excitement that I can announce there will be a variety of works occurring across the school in the coming 6 months.

Firstly, in our early childhood blocks, following the flood in 2020 we have had problems with the vinyl flooring in our rooms bubbling and splitting at the seams. Over the Christmas break the vinyl floors will be replaced in the 6 classrooms and wet areas. The works are expected to take the full 6 weeks of the holidays with the plan to have them all up and running again prior to the start of school.

Over the last year I have been pushing for some improvements and adjustments to the car park on Orange Grove Boulevard. I have had meetings regarding this over the last few weeks and we expect to see some improvements in this space over the first 6 months of next year.

Finally, following the McGowan Governments election commitment to boost science resources in public primary schools, our science laboratory conversion is due to commence in Term 1. Plans have been received and this process will take approximately 3 weeks and is supported by a $25,000 resource grant. This will help to support and establish science within our school as a specialist subject.

Lost Property

We have a large amount of lost property located out the front of the medical room. Please check for anything you may have lost. Any items not collected by the end of the year will be either donated to charity or used for spare uniforms.

Students Late to School

If your child arrives late to school, they are missing critical morning routines and learning activities. The school day begins at 8:40am and students will be considered late if they do not arrive by this time. If your child arrives after 9:00am you are required to enter through the front office and provide us with a reason for the lateness. A late slip will be printed for you to give to the class teacher.

Not Feeling Well?

If your child is not feeling well before school, please keep them home and notify the office by phoning 6206 4200, sending an SMS to 0437 480 486 or emailing somerly.ps@education.wa.edu.au.

Late Collection of Students

Somerly Primary School has a student finish time of 2.45pm each day. If your child has not been picked up before 3pm, you will be required to come to the front office to sign them out.

Pre-Primary 2022

All existing Kindergarten students are required to enrol for Pre-Primary in 2022. To complete the enrolment process, it is necessary for you to come to the school office as soon as possible to sign your child’s enrolment card and update your child’s information, if you have not already done so.

This process will ensure your child’s placement in our Pre-Primary program for 2022.

If your child will not be returning to Somerly Primary School in 2022, please advise the school office as soon as possible.

Arts Assembly

This terms Art Assembly was truly a huge success for the whole school. From our assembly speakers greeting us in Portuguese to each year group designing a Brazilian influenced art work to coincide with our Brazilian music unit. We saw all the Pre-Primary to Year 2’s sing and dance our Welcome to Brazil song in their beautiful masks, followed by our amazing Kapa Haka performance, educating us in all the colours in Maori. Excitement built when our Year 3 drummers layered the beat and rhythm for singers to sing the opening lines of Waka Waka before our whole school stood for the Waka Waka community song. The Arts department were very grateful for all the lovely school manners displayed in what was an exciting assembly and extremely pleased at all the hard work put in over the term, rehearsing the dances and music and putting final touches on the art pieces. Well done Somerly Primary School! You were all truly stars! Obrigado!

Waste Wise Schools - Gardening Club

Our Gardening Club has been very busy this term weeding and moving vegie mix soil to put into our garden beds thanks to our Waste Wise Schools grant.

We are currently looking for a mini bob cat driver and dingo to assist us with some soil removal around our garden beds, so we can place crushed pea gravel. If you can help please call Teresa Sanders at Somerly Primary School.
