Principal’s Report

Dear Parents/Caregivers

OUR SCHOOL VISION IS TO SUPPORT STUDENTS IN BECOMING STRONG, THOUGHTFUL AND INDEPENDENT INDIVIDUALS WHO ASPIRE TO BE THE BEST THAT THEY CAN BE. OUR ETHOS OFFERS STUDENT CENTERED EDUCATION THAT IS FOCUSSED ON BOTH THE PRESENT AND DEVELOPMENTAL NEEDS OF STUDENTS.

Welcome back to week 8. We hope you all had a nice WA Day long weekend and were able to spend some time with family, relaxing or spending time in our amazing State.

Year 6 Camp

It is a big week for our Year 6 students with school camp occurring from Wednesday to Friday at Ern Halliday Recreation Camp. Year 6 camp is an opportunity for our students to build their teamwork, communication and resilience. Students are challenged in fun and safe ways with a number of different activities across the three days. School camp takes a lot of organisation and commitment from staff and I would like to thank them for giving up their time to provide such an amazing opportunity to our students.

Leavers’ Shirts

A big thank you goes to the Somerly Primary School P&C for the organisation of the Year 6 leavers’ shirts. We appreciate your efforts for our students.

Reminder – Students should not arrive at school before 8.15am

Students should not be on school grounds before 8.15am each morning as they will not be supervised.

The classrooms open at 8.30am and the learning session begins at 8:40am. By arriving at 8:30am students are welcome into the classroom to prepare for the day. During this time, students can organise their materials and speak with the teacher about the expectations of the day. We encourage your child/ren to arrive at school by 8:30am to give them time to get organised.

Reports

In Western Australia, student achievement in the learning areas taught are reported on a five-point scale for all years from Pre-Primary to Year 10. Teachers use the Achievement Standards from the Western Australian Curriculum to assess and make judgements on your child’s achievement and progress. Teachers will also include information about your child’s attitude, behaviour and effort and will include relevant comments outlining achievements and areas of improvement.

Just a reminder that on Monday 28th June, parents will receive their child’s Semester One report via electronic delivery through your recorded email address. There are many benefits to electronic delivery, but to ensure you receive your child’s report, it is imperative that your email address recorded with the school is accurate. Please contact the school immediately to update your details if required. Please also note that the link to the reports only remains active for four weeks, so it is important that you download and save your report.

Staffing

I would like to inform you of some staff changes due to leave coming into effect this term. In week 10 we welcome back Mrs Melinda Gane from maternity leave who will commence in Kindy Room 6 on Wednesdays and in Room 12 on Thursdays. Ms Jayde Stapleton will leave us to commence her maternity leave in Week 10 and we wish her the best of luck.

NAIDOC Week and Excursion

We are excited to be able to offer a whole school excursion to Perth Hills Discovery Centre: Nearer to Nature, Mundaring. Classes (K-6) will attend on one of the allocated four days in Week 11 from Monday 28th June to Thursday 1st July 2021. Our initial cost for the excursion was $24 per child, we are now happy to announce our fundraising has reduced this cost to $22 per child. Please contact the front office regarding payment options. We are looking forward to this educational experience, as we recognise the cultural importance of NAIDOC and the nature that surrounds us. If you would like to see the venue, please go to the link below.

Maths News

Have Sum Fun Online

This term Somerly PS has once again entered teams in the Mathematics Association of WA’s termly completion known as “Have Sum Fun Online”. Selected Year 5 and Year 6 students have excitedly competed in the first round of the competition, with two more rounds occurring across the next two weeks. The teams compete against schools across the whole of WA and have to respond to ten NAPLAN type questions in a timed environment. The students are applying their problem-solving skills and learning to work collaboratively with a team to agree on their teams’ answers.

In the first Round:

Year 5 Ninjas – 8 out of 10
Year 5 Warriors – 7 out of 10
Year 6 Titans – 8 out of 10
Year 6 Pirates – 8 out of 10

At the end of each round we review answers and learn from the mistakes. For example, this week the Year 5 students learnt about the importance of the order of operations, Year 6 students learnt that ml and grams are equivalent and both teams considered the importance of accurately solving financial problems in real life situations. We were also able to celebrate our successes!!

I’m excited that we are able to provide extension opportunities to our students. Additionally, we have been able to fully subsidise the cost, so that all students are participating free of charge. I look forward to sharing the progress of the 4 teams.

Art

At the end of last term, some or our students took part in a National Gallery of Australia art competition, inspired by Van Gogh’s Sunflowers. Here are just some of the submissions, from our talented students.

Unfortunately, there were no winners from WA. If you would like to see the winning artwork, please see the website.

If your child did submit a piece of art and returned the permission slip before the deadline, please look out for an email from the National Gallery of Australia as it contains a Certificate of Participation. If you are not able to print this from home, please forward the email to the school where we can print it and present it to your child.

Well done to all that entered.

Year 3 Adventures

The in Year 3 we are currently enjoying writing animal reports in class. It is very exciting researching animal facts and information, writing the reports and then publishing our reports by making posters and producing Power Point presentations.

In Maths we have been looking at three-digit number addition and subtraction using a range of strategies. It is always exciting to use the MAB blocks and number lines. We have also been looking at measurement where everyone’s giant steps, arm spans, and ball tosses were measured.

During our history lessons, we were amazed at the importance of Kings Park and how it has changed over time. Did you know that Kings Park was named 'The Perth Park' in 1895? In 1901 the name was changed to 'Kings Park' to mark the ascension of King Edward VII to the British throne.

During Science we have been looking at what causes day and night and we got to play with shadows. Every Tuesday all the Year 3 students have been doing BlueEarth activities together. It has been a blast practicing our mindfulness, group work and body awareness during the BlueEarth activities.
