Principal’s Report
Dear Parents/Caregivers
As we come to the final few weeks of this very eventful semester it is very pleasing to see so many of our programs recommence. Thanks to our amazing staff, the following lunch time and before school groups have come back stronger than ever:
- Lunch time sport including Bluearth
- Kapa Haka
- Coding Club
- Drumming Group
- Inventors Club
- Musical Theatre Enrichment Program – a new program which is aimed and designed for students who are interested in performing arts
Along with the renewed energy of our school activities recommencing, the school has refocussed towards our future planning and needs. The administration team and lead teachers took the opportunity to plan and clearly articulate our ‘Strategic Directions’ in order to support our Business Plan for the next 18 months. This ‘Strategic Directions Document’ will be presented to the School Board this week and our lead teachers have already begun planning in order to achieve our set milestones.
Latest Update on COVID – 19 – Phase 3 Changes
We are now into our second week under the Phase 3 changes and I would like to thank you for your continued support in ensuring the safety of our staff, students and community. With the physical distancing requirements of adults and the restrictions of only 100 parents on school site at any one time, it is essential that you continue to follow our school guidelines in relation to the pickup and drop off of your child/ren.
Please remember:
- Parents and Carers are not to enter classrooms
- Parents wishing to meet with their class teacher need to pre-arrange a meeting by phone, email or message
- Parents of students in Years 1 – 6 – please drop at the school gates wherever possible
- Parents of K to PP only come on school site for pick up and drop off purposes
- Please remember classroom doors open at 8.30am and the bell time is 2.45pm
- Please do not remain on school grounds any longer than required
School activities such as incursions and excursions can now take place however must abide to the maximum of 100 people for indoor settings and 300 for outdoor settings. As such we will continue with our weekly communication and fortnightly class assemblies via Webex until further notice. We will also begin to plan athletics carnivals for next term using a modified structure.
Playground Shade Shelter
I am pleased to advise that the school has been successful in obtaining a $25,000 grant to construct a shade shelter over the senior playground. This is part of our ‘Playground Project’ to increase equipment and shady areas over recent years as the majority of our current play areas are in full sun. This will be very supportive of our continued Sunsmart message and I ask that you ensure that your child has an appropriate hat for play time.
Car Park – Safety
I would like to inform you that I am currently investigating the possible changes we can make to our car park on Orange Grove Boulevard to increase the safety and functionality for our parents and students. With this in mind, please ensure that you do not drive over the grassed areas or footpaths as it poses a significant risk to our students.
Reporting to Parents – Reminder
On Wednesday 1st July parents will receive their child’s Semester One formal report via Electronic Delivery through your recorded email address. There are many benefits to electronic delivery but to ensure you receive your child’s report, it is imperative that your email address recorded with the school is accurate. Please contact the school immediately to update your details if required. Please also note that the link to the reports only lasts four weeks, so it is important that you download and save your child’s report.
Uniforms –Update!
As mentioned previously the School Board recently approved a number of new additions to our school dress code policy. These include a black polar fleece jacket with the school logo, unisex black short with the school logo, black school skirt with in built shorts and school logo and finally a school dress. The items are currently with the Embroiderer and I am looking forward to having them on display and available soon.

Behaviour Focus
Our behaviour focus for Week 8 is:-
PLAY AREAS
RESPONSIBILITY
- We leave the play areas to get a drink and go to the toilet when the first siren goes.
- We are back at our class when the second siren goes.
- We seek help when we need to solve problems.
Students Late to School
If your child arrives late to school, they are missing critical morning routines and learning activities. The school day begins at 8:40am and students will be considered late if they do not arrive by this time. If your child arrives after 9:00am you are required to enter through the front office and provide us with a reason for the lateness. A late slip will be printed for you to give to the class teacher.
Not Feeling Well?
If your child is not feeling well before school, please keep them home and notify the office by phoning 6206 4200, sending an SMS to 0437 480 486 or emailing somerly.ps@education.wa.edu.au.
Late Collection of Students
Somerly Primary School has a student finish time of 2.45pm each day. If your child has not been picked up before 3pm, you will be required to come to the front office to sign them out.
School Photo Days
Our school photo days have been rescheduled and will now take place on 4th and 7th August 2020. Payment envelopes can be brought into school on the day of your child/ren’s photo session and handed to the class teacher. Online ordering is still available. Please use the school code located on your photo envelope.
Kindergarten Enrolments 2021
We are now taking Kindergarten applications for 2021. If you have a child that was born between 1 July 2016 and 30 June 2017 please come into the front office for an application form or visit our website.
As Kindy is non-compulsory, enrolments will be on a first in basis.
When applying we need a copy of your child’s birth certificate or passport, visa if applicable, current Medicare Immunisation History Statement (Refer to paragraph below) and proof of address.
Kindergarten children must be up to date with all scheduled immunisations for their age to be able to enrol.
To enrol in Kindergarten, a child must have one of the following documents:
- an Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement, no more than two months old with a status of 'up to date’
- an AIR Immunisation History Form, no more than six months old, if the child is on a catch up schedule
- a valid immunisation certificate issued or declared by the Chief Health Officer
If a child does not have an up to date Immunisation History Statement, exemptions because of particular family circumstances may apply. These exemptions are determined by the Principal.
If you know someone who has a child due to start Kindergarten next year, please let them know that enrolments are open.

Health
Crunch and Sip break is a set break for students to eat fruit or vegetables and drink water in the classroom. Somerly Primary School has introduced Crunch and Sip to support students to establish healthy eating habits whilst at school. Our aim is for all students and teachers to eat fruits or vegetables during crunch and sip every day. In the classroom and during this set break, students are to only drink water and it is encouraged that students have a bottle of water to drink from throughout the day. All fresh fruit and vegetables are permitted. Canned or dried fruit is also permitted but we encourage students to eat fresh fruit or vegetables as first choice due to the high concentration of natural sugars and it tends to cling to teeth, increasing risk of tooth decay (e.g. sultanas). Soon some information and resources from Crunch and Sip will be sent home with your child.

Chaplain’s Corner
Good day Parents and Caregivers,
I am very happy to inform you that our Community Pantry is up and running again. Just to remind you again, the Community Pantry is located in the old uniform shop in the undercover area next to the Canteen.
The Community Pantry will be open again starting next week Tuesday at 08:00am – 10.00am and then again from 14:00pm – 15:30pm. The same times will apply for the Friday as well. Even though the door might be closed, it will be unlocked. Please, feel free to go in and help yourself to any items you may need.
With all the current restrictions that are in place, can I please ask you to be mindful of social distancing. Seeing that it is such a small room, we would like to ask that only one family enter at a time. There will be a bottle of hand sanitizer in the room as well. Please use the hand sanitizer before packing your food in the bags.
We have received generous donations in the last couple of weeks and are well stocked at the moment.
As always stay safe, stay connected, and remember that I am always ready to help in any way I can. I will be at the school every Tuesday and Friday. If there is any way I can support your child/children, or yourself – please feel free to give me a call on (08) 6206 4200.
Have a great week!
Kind regards.
