Principal’s Report
Dear Parents/Caregivers
Somerly Primary School Review report
As previously communicated, Somerly Primary School engaged in a Public School Review process, in which all Western Australian public schools are reviewed every three years. A review gives assurance to the local community, the Minister for Education and Training and the Director General that a school is operating effectively and delivering high quality education to its students. A review of public schools is based on the following 6 domains;
- Relationships and Partnerships
- Learning Environment
- Leadership
- Use of Resources
- Teaching Quality
- Student Achievement and Progress
I am proud to announce that we were rated as an ‘effective’ school. The feedback we received from the reviewers was very positive. In particular, the review highlighted a strong sense of passion, collegiality, alignment, leadership and trust. Whole school programs with a continual focus on student progress was evident throughout. The review team made special mention of the high level of care that occurs for all students of Somerly Primary School.
The Somerly Primary School Review report, can be found below and on our school website.

Year 6 Clarkson Community High School Transition Day
On Tuesday 26th November, 11 Year 6 students from Somerly Primary School attended transition at Clarkson Community High School. They participated in some really fantastic activities, including seeing the performance arts area and doing a ‘listening’ trivia quiz, science experiments, cooking ham and cheese toasties and sport. It was great for students to get a taste of high school life and meet the students from other schools.

Learning Focus
Pre-Primary
This term in Maths, the Pre-primary classes have been learning a lot of new concepts. The children have been having fun learning to use arrays to represent equal groups as rows of objects. They have been identifying, making and drawing 2D shapes. We have also been extending our knowledge of quantities up to 20 and representing these numbers in a variety of ways.

Miss Avins, Miss Hobson and Miss Rosielle
Term 4 - Year 2
We can hardly believe it is nearly the end of the year! What a year it’s been in Year 2. The children have blown us away with all of the progress they have made this year and we are very proud of them!
English
This term in English we have focused on Report Writing and have tied this in with ICT as well. Students thoroughly enjoyed researching under the sea animals and writing reports about them. They learnt to use the skills of researching and note taking from both videos and books. They were also able to practice their typing skills, writing their reports into a Word document. This term we also learnt to use PowerPoint, and they created their own presentation about a sea animal and then they presented it to the class. Towards the end of this term children have learnt to write Acrostic Poems.

Maths
For the last half of the term in Maths we have looked at money and ways to make different amounts of money, solving money problems and calculating change. We also looked at 2D shapes and 3D objects. Students enjoyed making and drawing 3D objects. They have also looked at numbers to 1000 and identifying, writing and locating them on a number line.

Science
In Year Two this term we had Mealworms. As part of our Science program we observed the lifecycle of a Mealworm and how they changed over time. We discussed what they need to survive and how to care for them. All students were very excited to see the change in them over the term and they have now become darkling beetles.

Technology
This term as well as learning how to create a PowerPoint, we have also created a Digital Story Map in Word and have made our own Scratch Projects.

We wish all families a fantastic Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you for all of your support this year. We hope all families have a safe and relaxing holiday.
Miss Hamand, Mrs Reyneke, Mrs Louise-DeCarvalho and Mrs Gane
Year 1 – Maths
In Maths in Year One, we have been very busy across the term learning many new concepts.
When completing our Stepping Stones work, we have had lots of fun learning about fractions. We have been working out if the question wants us to split pictures or objects between halves (2) or quarters (4). We have then worked with a partner to share the whole amount out equally. We are very good at explaining if the fractions are equal and fair.

We have also been learning to tell the time. We are very good at telling the time to the hour on an analogue and a digital clock. We have been working on telling time to the half hour. As we have been practicing this, we can now wear our own watches and independently read them!

We have learnt so much in Maths this year. All of the students in Year One are excited and looking forward to building upon their knowledge and skills in Year Two!
