Principal’s Report

Dear Parents/Caregivers

As Term 3 concludes at the end of this week, I would like to wish all families a safe, enjoyable and relaxing break. Students recommence on Tuesday 15th October for the start of Term 4.

I would like to take this opportunity to announce that I have been asked to remain as Principal of Somerly Primary School for the remainder of the year. I am very grateful and honoured to be leading our School community over the next 3 months.

I would also like to wish Mrs Hill all the best as she commences maternity leave at the start of Term 4. Exciting times ahead for the Hill family and you’ll be missed by the Somerly community during your time on leave.

I am really pleased to inform that Mrs Mason will commence teaching in Room 16 on Monday and Tuesday. Mrs Mason comes with a wealth of knowledge as she has previously taught at Somerly Primary School over many years. A thorough handover is currently underway to ensure a smooth transition occurs.

Interschool Athletics Carnival

I wish to extend congratulations to all our students who recently competed in the Interschool Athletics Carnival. All students represented the school proudly and demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship at all times.

Fathering Project – Digital Technology

Miss Mundy and Ms Pavlinovich led our Fathering Project Dads and children through a range of coding activities. This included lego robot sumo wrestling, Dash and Dot, spheros, and Beebots.

This was our final Fathering Project event for 2019. Thank you to all the Dads and Father Figures who have attended throughout the year. We’re looking forward to planning further events in 2020.

Planning

We are continuing to plan for 2020 and need accurate numbers so we can make up classes and ensure we have enough staff for the beginning of the year. If you know that you will be leaving Somerly Primary School and haven’t yet advised the school office, please call in and let us know.

Lost Property

We have a large amount of lost property located in the green buckets outside the medical room. If you have misplaced an item at school, please check the buckets as soon as possible.

Arts Assembly

“THIS IS THE GREATEST SHOW”

On Friday the 20th of September, there was singing in the air and the sound of drums at the 2019 ARTS ASSEMBLY.

The assembly was a spectacular display of the hard work, dedication and talent of the music and art students at Somerly Primary School.

The One Big Voice choir performed a medley of the eleven songs they performed at the One Big Voice concert which featured some very special soloists from the school.

The Drumming Group opened the assembly with a play along to ‘The Greatest Show’ from the Greatest Showman” as well as played a mash up of songs which had everyone singing and clapping along.

Miss Bartley organised a wonderful art display of student work in the assembly area as well as in the classroom.

Both Miss Olsen and Miss Bartley as so proud of all the students at Somerly Primary School. All students have worked extremely hard and the assembly was the ‘cherry on top’ to show off what they have done!

Learning Focus

In Year One we have been learning how to write narratives. We looked at the book ‘Crunch the Crocodile’. We completed story maps and retell writing on this book.

After we completed that, we changed the story to create our own. Again, we completed story maps and then wrote our own stories. We have been working hard to sound-out our words and experiment with different punctuation when writing!

We have also been learning about adjectives. We got to eat a strawberry and write adjectives into a Y chart for what it looked like, felt like and tasted like.

In Maths, we have been learning about 3D shapes. We have learnt about the features of cones, cylinders, rectangular prisms, spheres and cubes. We have compared the shapes to work out similarities and differences. We have also been measuring the area of a shape with informal units. We used different types of pattern blocks, larger cubes, counters and dominoes to work out which would work with no overlapping or gaps left.

So far this year we have learnt so much. We are looking forward to what we learn in our final term of Year One!

Year 2

What a busy Term 3 it has been! The students have continued to amaze us with their hardworking attitude and perseverance even when it’s been a busy term. All students demonstrated great sportsmanship on carnival day, and it was fantastic to see them all having fun!

English

This term in English we have focused on narrative, persuasive and report writing. Over the last few weeks we have been listening to stories and videos about animals. Students have learnt the skill of note taking and have then used their notes to write reports on a range of animals. We have then tied this area of writing into technology and students have been creating a PowerPoint about an animal. We can’t wait to see the finished PowerPoint presentations. During reading sessions, the students have learnt to create images, predict, question, skim and scan. During book week students enjoyed listening to stories in space and also enjoyed talking about their favourite book and what made it their favourite. They then created a book report about their favourite book.

Maths

This term in Maths we have looked at arrays, groups of, time in five-minute intervals, addition and subtraction and length and capacity. Students enjoyed estimating, measuring and comparing the capacity and length of different objects and using different materials to measure.

Science

This term in Science we have been looking at mixtures and what happens when we mix certain items together. We also investigated different mixtures we see at home and at school and how just one ingredient can change a mixture. The students have enjoyed getting to create and make different mixtures.

We wish all families a safe and relaxing holiday and are looking forward to an exciting final term in Year 2.

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER

Good day Parents!

Thank you so much for all the wonderful feedback we received with our Parents Survey. We have looked at all the suggestions and are happy to let you know that the first workshop will be on Wednesday, 6 November 2019, starting at 17:30. The workshop will be focusing on Cyber Safety. We will send out a reminder closer to the time again.

I am also very excited to tell you more about a new project at our beautiful school. Starting the first week of Term 4, we will have a Community Pantry at Somerly Primary. The idea behind this pantry is that any family from our school community, that might be in need of any food, can come and help themselves to some basic food and household items. All these are donations received by Ray White Leading Edge Clarkson as well as from some local Churches. The idea is also that if any member of our School community would like to donate any food or household items, they are more than welcome to. More information about opening times will follow soon.

Lastly, I would like to invite all parents to come and join me for a cup of coffee on Friday, 18th of October, straight after the Assembly in Chaplain’s Room.

Have a wonderful School holiday!!

Kind regards.
Marilize

Free Parent Seminar

FREE SEMINARS – for EVERY PARENT
Triple P – Positive Parenting Program
TERM 4, 2019

“Children who grow up with positive parenting are more likely to develop the skills they need to do well at school, build friendships, and feel good about themselves.”

Most parents have times when they find their children’s behaviour challenging.

The Triple P – Positive Parenting Program is one of the world’s most effective parenting programs. Developed by clinical psychologist Professor Matt Sanders and his colleagues at the University of Queensland, Triple P has been tested with thousands of families through ongoing research over more than 30 years.

Triple P is designed to give parents the skills they need to raise confident, healthy children and to build stronger family relationships. Research has shown it works across cultures, socio-economic groups and in many different family structures.

Triple P doesn’t tell people how to parent. Rather, it offers simple and practical strategies that parents can adapt to suit their own values, beliefs and needs. The benefits can be dramatic and long-lasting.

All parents of children aged 3-12 years are invited to attend free Triple P seminars on offer at Somerly Primary School next term which will be facilitated by school psychologist Chris Moody
