Principal’s Report
Dear Parents/Caregivers
I would like to wish Mrs Davies all the best as she commences maternity leave at the start of Term 3. Exciting times ahead for the Davies family and you’ll be missed by the Somerly community during your time on leave.
I am really pleased to inform you that Mrs Gane will commence teaching in Room 23 on Thursday and Friday, with Mrs Louise-De Carvalho changing days to teach on Monday to Wednesday. A thorough handover is currently underway to ensure a smooth transition occurs.
Semester 1 Student Achievement Reports
Student Achievement reports will be sent out via email on Friday 28th June 2019. If you have recently updated your email address but have not yet advised the school, please do so as soon as possible so that we can update the records to ensure that your child’s report is sent to the correct email address. Please call the office on 6206 4200 to arrange any update.
Parent, student and teacher ‘three-way conferences’
As previously communicated, on Monday 1st July 2019, the school day will conclude at 11:45am to enable three-way conferences to occur - parent/student/teacher meetings. Parents are requested to collect their children at 11:45am. The timing of the meetings will enable you to discuss your child’s progress and Semester One Student Report with their classroom teacher. You can also book meetings with Music, Physical Education, Art and Italian Specialist Teachers.
Three-way conferences will be held between 12:00pm and 5:00pm. Please open the link below on your web browser to book in a meeting time. Please note the link will open at 5.30pm on Monday 17th June 2019 and will close at 5.30pm on Friday 28th June 2019.

As this is a meeting to discuss your child’s progress with their teacher, it is important that siblings are not in attendance to minimise disruptions.
Online Canteen
Please note that lunch orders through the Clarkson Community High School Online Canteen will now operate on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Somerly families will no longer be able order online lunches on Wednesday.
However, our P&C Committee will continue to run their Wednesday lunch, consisting of a sausage sizzle and a drink for $5. Orders should be placed in an envelope with name, room number and any sauce preference and given to the Classroom teacher on Wednesday mornings.
Book Week and Science Week
This year, Book Week and Science Week overlap in August. Due to Swimming Lessons, we will be celebrating both Book Week and Science Week during the week beginning 12th August 2019. Stargazing Evening
CHAPLAIN’S CORNER
Good day Parents!
Firstly, thank you so very much to all of our wonderful P&C members and other parent volunteers that continually give up their own time serving up warm toasties and milo to our students every Wednesday and Friday morning at Breakfast Club. – THANK YOU! You contribute your time, energy, and smiles to make a difference in the lives of our students. You are a key part of what makes Somerly Primary School a great place to be! Thank you again – we appreciate you!
I would also like to invite all parents to “Coffee with the Chaplain” on Friday 26 July 2019, straight after the Assembly in the Chaplain’s Room (the demountable behind the Senior block). It will be great to spend some time to get to know each one of you.
Have a great week!!

Learning Focus
Design
The children from Year 3 have been using the design process to create a raft that could float when being pushed and pulled by the ocean currents. They used straws and sticky tape and modified their designs to hold weight.

LOTE Assembly 2019
The Year 5/6’s worked diligently over the last month on their Italian assembly plays. It has been very pleasing to see the effort shown with pronunciation, intonation and expression of sentences from all students. The groups worked cooperatively and enthusiastically to ensure they could perform well in Italian. Magnifico team work!
Tayla, Jessica and Franz informed the school on some of the cultural history of Italian food and its influences. Bravi ragazzi!
A definite highlight of the assembly was having the whole school participate in the two Italian community songs. Grazie Miss Olsen.

Maths in Pre-Primary
In Pre-Primary this term we have enjoyed learning a new concept – addition - to find the total of two numbers or amounts.
We have participated in fun Origo Maths activities to practice combining two amounts and add two amounts together. We have become familiar with the mathematical language of addition and use it in our numeracy activities daily. We have looked at addition stories and combined two amounts to find the total, used dice to play a board game and explicitly placed each total on an addition board before combining them together to find the added total using Unifix cubes and other manipulatives. We are beginning to write our own addition stories and write an addition story to match an illustration or collections of objects.
It is a fun and exciting time in Pre-Primary diving into addition with our Origo Numeracy program.

Community Garden
This year the year 2's adopted some of the responsibilities of managing the school’s garden. During the semester, students had the opportunity to plant seedlings, water the plants, pull some weeds and harvest the crops. It has been a pleasure, and very exciting, to see our seasonal tomatoes, zucchini, capsicum, spring onions & herbs seedlings growing bigger and bigger every week. The students found tasting the basil and coriander herbs interesting during one of our Mind Up lessons, when we practiced our mindful smelling, feeling and tasting. It took lots of patience watching our produce growing slowly, but eventually we were able to harvest some of our produce to make pizzas and have some delicious tastings.
