Schools and teachers use NAPLAN data to improve teaching and learning programs in the classroom. Skills that will be tested include reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation and numeracy. All students in Years 3 and 5 are expected to participate in NAPLAN testing.
The best way to assist your child in preparation for NAPLAN is to reassure your child that the tests are just one part of the school program and urge them to do the best they can on the day. It is important for you and your child to know that NAPLAN is not a pass/fail test.
You can help your child become familiar with NAPLAN Online by accessing the public demonstration site on the NAPLAN website. The demonstration site includes useful resources for schools to help students become familiar with the online test experience. The Public demonstration site provides mini-tests that provide an example of what types of questions students will encounter.
https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site
Later in the year we will send parents an individual student NAPLAN report that you can use to view and monitor how your child is progressing.
More information is available on the NAPLAN website and if you have any concerns, please contact Mrs Louise Carroll on 6206 4200.
Easter Hat Parade
Thank you to all the students who participated in the Easter Hat Parade. It was fantastic to see such creativity and colour this year. We really value family attendance at our school events.

ANZAC Service
On Friday 12th April the Somerly Primary School community held a commemorative service to remember those who had fought for freedom. The Student Councillors read several passages that reflected on the happenings of World War 1 and the beginning of the ANZAC traditions. Wreaths were laid to honour the memories of those who died and several books were donated to the school as a reminder of this special and significant day. I would also like to thank Warrant Officer Bruce Williams for his personal words about the ANZAC spirit. All students’ respectful behaviour and deep reverence during the service is to be commended.

NAIDOC Week 10 Term 2
As part of our NAIDOC Week this year we will be taking the whole school on an excursion to Kings Park. The excursion will be spread over 3 days Tuesday 2nd July to Thursday 4th July with each class attending on one of the days. This will be a whole day excursion with students leaving school at 8.40am and returning at 2.40pm. The cost for the excursion will be $20 and will cover the bus trip and the educational program. Please refer below to see which day your child/ren’s class/es will be going. The students will spend time in the Rio Tinto Naturescape exploring the outdoor learning and discovery facility that connects students to nature.
Each class will do one of the following education programs relevant to their age group.
- Koora Koora Kaarta Koomba - Kindy to Year 1 – Describe how Perth has changed over time and learn about its first people and traditional custodians, the Wadjuk Nyoongar people. Through song, dance and role play, explore the Nyoongar language, recite and sing a special song, Yonga Sleeping. Learn how Nyoongar people used plants and animals for food, medicine, tools, shelter and protection, with a focus on the roles of men and women. Engage with the storytelling tradition, play traditional games and enjoy face painting.
- Chunyart and the Cheeky Parrot – Years 2 and 3 - Follow the story of Chunyart, a young Nyoongar boy and his cheeky Twenty Eight Parrot on his journey through Wadjuk Country. Learn how plants and animals provided food, tools, shelter and medicine for Nyoongar people and how they took care of the lands. Students investigate family structures and totems and engage in hands on activities, including traditional first aid, hunting games and the use of symbols to share a story to family and place.
- From Firesticks to Fireworks – Years 4 to 6 – Discover the history and cultural significance of Kaarta Koomba in this interactive walk through the WA Botanic Garden. Learn how the Wadjuk Nyoongar people were guided by the six seasons and used plants and animals for food, shelter, tools and medicine. Through role-play, discuss the first European explorers to the Swan River Colony and consider the changes that have taken place in Perth from early settlement to today.

We will also have activities and experiences that promote and extend physical skills, socialisation skills and language skills.
For our babies, there will be tummy time (to strengthen their back and neck muscles), push and pull toys, some wonderful books to look at, finger rhymes and songs to sing.
Playgroup is FREE and held every Wednesday at Somerly Primary school during term times between 9.30-11.30am, for Aboriginal children up to 5yrs of age and their carers.
