Staff changes
Sadly, several staff members won’t be returning to Somerly Primary School in 2019, we are saying fond goodbyes to Mrs Sumegi who is commencing maternity leave. Miss Barlow, Mr Collie and Mr Stanton will be working at alternative schools and Ms Searle is retiring. I would like to extend a huge thank you to them for their wonderful contribution to our school and wish them well for the future.
The first day back for students in 2019 is Monday 4th February.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff and students at Somerly Primary School and wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.

Behaviour Focus
Our behaviour focus for Week 10 is:-
RESPECT;
CLASSROOM
- We welcome new people and experiences
Reading Eggs
What a great start we have had to our Reading Eggs and Reading Egsspress program. So far our Reading Eggs students have totalled 837.4 hours and our Reading Egsspress students have totalled 448.8 hours since we started in Week 7.
It is really important in the program students read a balance of Fiction and Non Fiction texts from their bookshelf. Teachers will start setting Non Fiction books for students to read as tasks. They will need to complete these tasks first before using any of the other activities.
How Can I help over the school holidays?
- On return to school we will be asking for 5 x20 min sessions per week. When you have a spare 20 mins let them log in.
- Going on holiday and don’t have a lot of room for books? Take a device with you to access Reading Eggs and the over 2000 books in the library.
- Going somewhere special like the Zoo, AQWA, The Beach, The City, on a Train – you could read a Non Fiction book from the library on a related topic before you go.
Eggceptional Readers
Well done to our Eggceptional readers for Weeks 7 and 8 who have shown dedication and commitment with their reading

Learning Focus
Block 4
Wow - what a year it has been! It has been an absolute privilege to teach your beautiful children and to see all the amazing progress and development that has occurred throughout the year.
This term we focussed on the theme ‘Under the Sea”. The children had to research a variety of sea creatures, shipwrecks and natural disasters. The children had to use a range of ICT skills in order to present their information to their group or class. We then implemented this research into different forms of writing techniques, such as persuasive, narrative and information reports.

Last term the children created a book for the Elephant Nature Park after the inspiring talk from Mrs Marshall about her experience in Thailand with the elephants. The book was sent off to Thailand and is now on display in the main office for a variety of tourists and nature park workers to view at their leisure.

The children have been fortunate this term to be signed up to Reading Eggs. The Year 2’s absolutely love this program and it is so exciting for us teachers to see the amount of reading that has been occurring at home. We would like to thank all the parents and caregivers who have supported their child with this fantastic program. Please continue the amazing effort over the summer holidays.

In our Mindup program, the children have been learning about gratitude and how we can positively express our gratitude to people that have an influence in our lives. The children created a gratitude tree in class and it was lovely to hear the things that they are grateful for.

We wish all our families a truly beautiful Christmas, and may 2019 treat you all exceptionally well.
With thanks and very best wishes.
Mrs Fawcett, Miss Hamand and Miss Mundy
Music
Miss Olsen would like to wish all the students and families at Somerly a wonderful and safe Christmas break. The students have spent the past few weeks preparing for the Christmas Concert where each year group will sing a different Christmas-y song. Some of the songs will include props such as guitars in Run Run Rudolph; Candy Canes for Candy Cane Lane by Sia and GRINCH MASKS for the Year 4’s, You’re A Mean One, Mr Grinch. Other year groups have been learning dances/movements to go with their songs. It’s going to be an awesome time!
Room 9
On Friday the 7th of December, Room 9 visited Room 15, Miss Hamand’s class to share a very special experience. In ICT, Room 9 had been working with the App ‘Book Creator’ to plan, create and design a book aimed for Year 2’s with an ‘Under the Sea’ theme. Room 9 sat and read their finished products with the Year 2’s, showing off their plots, illustrations and special features! The Year 2’s were super excited and some even got to learn how to use the program and how they could make their own book!
Thank you, Room 15 and Miss Hamand for having us!
