Principal’s Report

Dear Parents/Caregivers

Principals Lunch

On Tuesday 4th September the Administration Team had the pleasure of hosting the 3rd Principal’s Lunch for the year. The luncheon recognises the outstanding behaviour of students. All in attendance displayed beautiful manners as they enjoyed a lunch of chicken and rice, followed by an icy-pole for dessert. Congratulations to all of the students who were nominated.

Interschool Carnival

I wish to extend congratulations to all our students that recently competed in the Interschool Athletics Carnival. All students represented the school proudly and demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship at all times.

NAPLAN

Students in years 3 and 5 who participated in NAPLAN will receive their reports this week. If you should have any queries in regards to your child’s results, please make an appointment to meet with your classroom teacher.

School Run 4 Fun Colour Explosion

A reminder that families are invited to join their child/ren for a picnic lunch on school grounds this coming Friday at 1.00pm. Following lunch, all students will participate in the Run4Fun colour explosion, which will be held on the oval at 1.50pm. Students are encouraged to wear a white or old t-shirt for the run and to bring a water bottle to school as the weather is looking to be nice and warm.

Dogs on school grounds

Dogs are wonderful pets; however, like children they require care, education and restraint. Some of our students have an aversion to dogs while others have an allergy associated with dogs. Please support these students and refrain from bringing your dog onto school grounds.

Planning for 2019

We are continuing to plan for 2019 and need accurate numbers so we can make up classes and ensure we have enough staff for the beginning of the year. If you know that you will be leaving and haven’t yet advised the school office, please call in and let us know.

Lost Property

We have a large amount of lost property located in the green buckets outside the medical room. If you have misplaced an item at school, please check the buckets.

New students

I would like to extend a warm welcome to Moon who recently commenced at Somerly Primary School.

I wish everyone a safe and relaxing break and look forward to seeing students back at school for an exciting term 4. Please note school re-commences on Tuesday 9th October.

Year 6 Camp

On the 12th September I went to Ern Halliday in Hillarys for the Year 6 camp. I really enjoyed all the activities; however, my two favourite activities would have to be the flying fox and a game called ‘Lost Pilot’. On the first day we had to do team building, but after that we did the flying fox. The staff that worked at Ern Halliday were really nice and very encouraging and made everyone enjoy the activities. To make things easier we were split up into three day groups and 4 dorm groups (2 girl groups and 2 boy groups) and in each dorm was a teacher. Altogether camp was an amazing experience and I loved it!
Kaitlyn Butterly (Room 7)

My favourite thing to do at camp was going bushwalking and exploring the camp. My favourite activities were definitely the flying fox and archery. I also liked hanging out in the dorms, playing games with the girls. When we went bushwalking, we all got to catch up, which was nice.
Layla Sewpal (Room 9)

I went to camp and I was in Group 2, which went to ‘Lost Pilot’ first. I loved walking around and having a ‘Code Red’, which means the staff are coming and you have to link up with your group to be safe. You had to find the lost pilot. My group did find him – luckily we just made it. I also really enjoyed the last day with the flying fox. I loved having to jump off and swing across. Actually, I went upside down and went with no hands and it was so so so much fun! Camp is my favourite thing of all and it was great being away from school and home for three days and two nights.
Jade Cullen (Room 7)

On camp I think the best thing was ‘Lost Pilot’ because we had radios and we had to run through the bush to find artefacts. There were two people with us, their names were Sam and Zac. We all had to link arms to be safe and there was a Code Blue, where we could catch the hunters and ask them questions. Then we had to find the pilot and save him.
Jayden Chalmers-Pearman (Room 9)

Learning Focus

Music

In Term 3, we have been focusing on instruments and the families they belong to. There are four families of instruments; string, woodwind, brass and percussion. Students have been exploring which instruments belong to these families, the noises they make and how they make their sounds! Students have learnt that all sound is vibration and comes in the form of soundwaves! They also know that the larger or longer the instrument, the lower the pitch of the instrument will be, and the smaller or shorter the instrument, the higher the pitch will be.

Students have also explored making musical instruments which could also be a fun holiday activity! This can be done using everyday items.

Check out the following link for some ideas! And happy music making!

Wishing everyone a safe and fun holiday!

Physical Education

On the 14th of September a select group of students from Years 3 to 6 competed against schools in the local area. Each year group worked together to compete in team games such as Leader Ball, Pass Ball and Tunnel Ball. The students running in their individual divisions all competed well and continually gave their best effort. All students are to be commended on their team skills and sportsmanship. It was a great day enjoyed by all.

Block 4 –Term 3

Writing

This term we have predominantly focused on persuasive writing. The children had to learn to use persuasive language, this included words and phrases, for example, in my opinion; I believe; against; strongly believe. We were fortunate enough to have Mrs Marshall visit and speak to all the Year Two children about her time in Thailand at the Elephant Nature Park. Mrs Marshall provided an insight into the difficulties that some elephants face. With this information, the children had to research reasons as to whether they believe elephants should be kept in captivity. It was lovely to hear the depth of language that was being used in all the classrooms, with the children providing factual and emotional reasons for their point of view.

Guided Reading

In Guided Reading we have been studying and discussing a wide range of poetry. From this we have had the children creating images and making connections to themselves, text to text and to the world. They have also been taught to infer meaning from a range of pictures using a variety of text types. The children have enjoyed the richness of vocabulary and the emotional language that these poems have provided. We have been fortunate to have Ms Lipman work with the classes this term and we know that the children have thoroughly enjoyed this. The children have also been using the Ipads for QR codes, comprehension and oral retells.

Mathematics

The main focus this term has been getting the children to have a deeper understanding of number. We have included a variety of games to our rotations, to support the children with their application of skills. We have also revisited money and we strongly encourage children to handle money at home, or whilst out shopping with family, so that they understand the ‘real value’. The children have enjoyed learning how to read calendars and acknowledging special events. Within our focus on mathematic vocabulary, we have continued to work on multi-step word problems. This is an area that children find challenging and we will continue with this focus in Term Four.

ICT

We have some PowerPoint wizards in this cohort! The children had to research a jungle animal and then present their PowerPoint to a group or whole class. It was fabulous to see the depth of knowledge that they had on their chosen animal. The children independently researched and paraphrased all their information and had to use a wide variety of websites. Thank you to all the families who helped to support their child’s eagerness to create PowerPoints at home.

MindUp

This term, the Year Two cohort have been fortunate to access the MindUp curriculum. This is being led by Ms Pavlinovich and focusses on lessons that promote social and emotional awareness, enhance psychological wellbeing and promote academic success. The children learn about the brain and how it functions, how to improve their self-control and self-regulation skills, they also develop positive social skills such as empathy and compassion. The children are loving this program and it is fantastic to see and hear them put their new skills into action in the playground.

We wish all our families a wonderful, restful and safe holiday. We are looking forward to another eventful term.

Mrs Fawcett, Miss Hamand and Ms Mundy
