Principal’s Report

Dear Parents/Caregivers

Reports

If you have changed your email address can you please notify the front office as soon as possible as all reports will be sent home electronically for all students on Monday 28th June.

School Crossing

The safety of children travelling to, from and around schools is an issue of concern for the whole community. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, children ages 16 and under are the most at-risk for getting hurt while crossing the road. We encourage all parents to discuss the importance of utilising the crosswalk on Connolly Drive with their children when crossing the road.

School Disco

Our first school disco for the year is to be held on Wednesday 27st June. The DJ for the night will be our very own Miss Olsen.

Tickets are available on the night for the cost of $3:00.

K- 3 - 3:30 – 5:00 - All students must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Staff Changes

This term we say a fond goodbye to Ms Hutchison. She will be sadly missed by students and staff. Ms Hutchison will be replaced by Ms Alanah Barlow, who is returning to Perth after teaching at Wiluna Remote Community School for 3 years. Ms Barlow will be spending time in the classroom next week getting to know the students to enable a seamless transition for all.

Bushman’s Lunch

The P&C are fundraising with a Bushman’s Lunch on Wednesday 27th June. The lunch will cost $5.00 and consists of a sausage in a bun with a drink. All orders must be in by Friday 22nd June.

Parent Survey

Please see below our 2018 Independent Public Schools Development Program Parent and Community Survey. If would be greatly appreciated if you could complete and return the survey to our school office. The survey will only take a few minutes to complete.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data for School Students with Disability

Our school is part of a national project about students with disability and/or learning difficulties.

We have been asked to provide data about the number and learning needs of children at our school. The name of the school and the name of the students will not be reported. Information about the different types of needs and the programs and resources the school uses to overcome barriers and support children with special educational needs will be collected.

We believe it is important to contribute to this because it will help Governments and the Department develop better policies that acknowledge the level of resources needed in schools to meet the needs of all students in Western Australia.

The Fathering Project

The Fathering Project is an opportunity to have fun with your kids and become part of a strong and supportive network of Dads and father figures connected to Somerly Primary School.

Our inaugural event is in partnership with Bunnings Mindarie. It is planned for Wednesday 15th August from 5:00pm. Further information, along with an invitation and RSVP will be attached to our first Newsletter in Term 3. There will be a cap of 25 students (accompanied by their dad’s/father figure’s) for this event – First in first serve.

Key Tips from The Fathering Project to Support Dads and Father Figures in Our School Community

Tip No.2 - Show your children ‘Unconditional Love’. Unconditional love is about the need kids have to know that they will be loved by you unconditionally, no matter how they are performing or behaving, or whether they have achieved success or failure in school, in their activities or their social lives. You don’t necessarily have to ‘like’ the way they are talking, behaving or the outcomes of their actions at any specific time, but it is vitally important for kids to know they will be loved no matter what.

The time your kids will need your love the most will often be the time it is the hardest to give it to them.

Chaplain’s Corner

Good day Parents

In light of our weekly information regarding our kids and anxiety, I found some interesting and valuable tips for Parents that I would like to share with you.

  1. Respect and validate your child’s feelings. Anxiety is a real emotion and not pleasant.
  2. Teach your child deep, slow belly breathing. This is an easy and very portable skill for self-soothing and calming.
  3. Listen to your child and ask “Tell me what you are thinking?” This will help to reveal scary thought and scenes that build up in your child’s mind.
  4. Prompt your child with “Tell me some things you can do to handle this situation” and help brainstorm rather than just giving solutions. Your child will feel more empowered.
  5. Encourage your child’s attempts to be brave, no matter how small they seem to you. Use labelled praise such as “I am so proud of you for sleeping in your own bed last night”.

Hope you can find these tips helpful.

If you need more information or you need some support in any way, please contact me at school or pop in for a chat.

Have a great week.

Warm regards
Marilize (School Chaplain)

Learning Focus

Health and Physical Education

What a busy semester it has been at Somerly Primary School! We have competed in the Summer Carnival, Winter Carnival and Cross Country. Students in the senior years had coaches from Rugby WA, Netball WA, Perth Glory and West Perth Football Club to prepare them for the Winter Carnival. Our Athletics Carnival is next term so students will begin to practice in preparation for the event.

Summer Carnival

Students competed in Speedball, Cricket, Tee-Ball and Basketball. All teams played well and competed to the best of their abilities. Our basketball teams performed amazingly and both teams were undefeated for the day.

Winter Carnival

Students competed in AFL, Netball, Rugby Tag and Football. It was a wonderful day with all teams doing their best and showing great sportsmanship. Our Netball girls had a fantastic day winning the B Grade and coming 2nd in the C Grade.

Students Late to School

If your child arrives late to school, they are missing critical morning routines and learning activities. If your child arrives after 9:00am you are required to enter through the front office and provide us with a reason for the lateness. A late slip will be printed for you to give to the class teacher.

Not Feeling Well?

If your child is not feeling well before school, please keep them home and notify the office by phoning 6206 4200, sending an SMS to 0437 480 486 or emailing somerly.ps@education.wa.edu.au.
