Dear Parents/Caregivers

With the mornings now being very chilly, we are encouraging all students to wear their school jacket or jumper to school. A plain black jacket is also acceptable. School jackets can be purchased from Uniform Concepts Nell Gray at 5/7 Delage Street, Joondalup, WA, 6027. Please make sure your child’s name is written in them to avoid being put into lost property.

Reporting to Parents - Electronic Report Delivery Semester One 2018

A reminder to parents that in Week 9 you will receive your child's Semester One report via email. It is important to note that the link to the report only remains active for 4 weeks. This means to keep a copy of the report you are required to download and save a copy ASAP after receiving it.

In Western Australia, student achievement in the learning areas taught, are reported on a five-point scale for all years from Pre-Primary to Year 10. Teachers use the Achievement Standards from the West Australian Curriculum to assess and make judgements on your child's achievement and progress. Teachers will also include information about your child's attitude, behaviour and effort and will include relevant comments outlining achievement and areas for improvement.

The Achievement Standards utilised by teachers from the West Australian Curriculum outline the expected achievement for students for that year of schooling. The grades allocated by teachers mid-year are based on the curriculum content that has been taught. If your child receives a 'C Grade or Satisfactory' allocation, according to the West Australian Curriculum they are achieving where they are expected for that year level of schooling.

English as an Additional Language or Dialect

Students who speak English as an additional language or dialect will also receive an EAL/D report. This includes students who speak a language other than Standard Australian English as their first language. Teachers recognise that EAL/D students learning Standard Australian English require on-going explicit language support over time in different contexts. They utilise the Progress Maps as an assessment tool to monitor progress and to make judgements on listening, speaking, reading/viewing and writing across 8 levels. The development of Standard Australian English acquisition is outlined across the 8 levels, from beginning, to emerging, to developing and finally consolidating.

To ensure you receive your child's report it is imperative that your email address held with the school is correct. If there have been any changes to your email address, please contact the front office ASAP.

If you have any queries, please contact me on 6206 4200.

The Fathering Project

The first Fathering Project event will be planned for early Term 3. More details will be provided in due course.

Key Tips from The Fathering Project to Support Dads and Father Figures in Our School Community

Tip No.1 - Take each of your kids out regularly for 'Dad Dates' that involve one-on-one time when it suits your family context. Be deliberate about creating these special times, talk with your children to discuss options and ideas of what you can do or where you can go with them and be intentional in placing them into your diary. Persevere, it may take time to connect and then try to spend that time just listening to them. Try to make them regularly planned events that you share with each of your children.

Chaplain’s Corner

Good day Parents

Can you believe we are already half way through this term?

With the weeks getting busier by the minute, our kids sometimes feel a bit anxious or worried. All kids can have a hard time regulating or explaining their feelings. Some have a tougher time than others.

Many children experience anxiety, worry and fear in their daily lives. Sometimes it could be because of something small like forgetting their hat at home that may cause them to be anxious and sometimes it can be something bigger like having no one to play with at recess and lunch.

Sometimes children are unable to verbalize their feelings but they are showing physical signs that we can look out for. Some of these signs may include the following:

  • They avoid new experiences
  • They resists change
  • They are irritable
  • They dread future events
  • They struggle to sleep
  • Narrow focus of interest
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • They are withdrawn

Over the next few weeks we will look at the effects of anxiety on our kids and what we as parents can do to help them as well as resources we can use to make things easier for them.

If you are unsure about the signs your child is showing or your need some support in any way, please contact me at school or pop in for a chat.

Have a great week

Warm regards

Marilize – School Chaplain
