Learning Focus

Term 1 in the Music Room

Term 1, 2018 has gone off with a BANG with a very busy term and lots of things happening.

Earlier in the term we had Child Entertainer, Peter Combe visit our school which the students loved! In the lead up to this event, we made NEWSPAPER MUMMA hats, played with RED BALLOONS, pretended to be characters in the ENORMOUS TURNIP, learnt how to play CHOPSTICKS on the Xylophone and illustrated the songs TADPOLE BLUES and the SILLY POSTMAN. To top it off, we sung TING TANG TENG TONG as our community song!

During Term 1 the students have been developing their music skills so they are able to successfully read and play music on various instruments, they have learned various chords on the ukulele in order to play songs, explored song structure by writing their own songs for Harmony Day and have listened and responded to a wide range of Music.

Our Music Room is also very busy during lunchtimes! We have started a board/card game session for students who wish to play games at lunch and an open music room for students to play on and explore the musical instruments and dance.

The Choir is still on at lunch and have already debuted at assembly by leading the school in the Community Song, This Is Me. They are currently preparing for the ANZAC Ceremony on the final day of term. We also have a group of special students from Year 3-6 preparing for the ONE BIG VOICE Concert which will take place in August. This is a massive commitment for these students who need to learn ELEVEN songs for this event! They are very excited and this is an awesome opportunity for Somerly Primary School.

I wish all the students at Somerly a safe and happy break! And hope you come back ready for another amazing term in the Music room!

Block 4

Wow, what a busy term we have had so far! In Year Two we have been focusing on prediction, sequencing, connections to text and creating images in our guided reading sessions. The children chose the theme of ‘dragons’ to help them focus on these skills. It has been thrilling to see the children absorb and run with all the new vocabulary that they have been learning.

From the success of the dragon theme, we then implemented this into our class writing. We have predominantly focused on narratives. The children have had to work on a narrative structure including identifying and describing the main character, the setting and the conflict and resolution in the story.

For the remainder of the term, our writing focus will be on procedures. Once again we linked this to our reading program where the focus text is The Gingerbread Man. The children had a great time baking their gingerbread men and decorating them and then afterwards wrote a procedure about the process of baking the gingerbread men. The success criteria for good procedure writing is being able to follow step by step instructions, therefore forming a sequence.

Before we begin our learning activities, we always start our day with Gymbaroo. This program really helps the children to focus and concentrate on tasks. We are already seeing improvements in balance, posture and longer attention spans.

We would like to thank all our families for their support this term and wish you all a wonderful, safe and restful break over the Easter long weekend.

LOTE Assembly

The LOTE assembly for 2018 featured students from Yrs 5/6 performing plays. In rehearsals it was wonderful to see the students cooperating and practising together to achieve the desired outcome. The selected students from each year have worked diligently in the Listening/Speaking strand and to see these efforts come to fruition was Otiimo! As a result of the performance I can see some students who not only can speak in Italian but also showed lots of confidence and charisma. Magnifico ragazzi!

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data for School Students with Disability

All schools in Australia, including Independent and Catholic schools, will participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) on School Students with Disability every year.

The Data Collection is an annual count of the number of students with disability receiving educational adjustments to support their participation in education on the same basis as students without disability.

All education agencies are now required under the Australian Education Regulation 2013, to provide information on a students’ level of education, disability and level of adjustment to the Australian Government Department of Education. Data will continue to be de-identified prior to its transfer and no student’s identity will be provided to the Australian Government Department of Education.

The collection of this information from states and territories will inform future policy and program planning in relation to students with disability.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mr Andrew Britton on 6206 4200 or the Western Australian Department of Education NCCD Helpline on 0477 741 598.

Students Late to School

The school day begins at 8:40am and students will be considered late if they do not arrive by this time. If your child arrives after 9:00am you are required to enter through the front office and provide us with a reason for the lateness. A late slip will be printed for you to give to the class teacher.

Not Feeling Well?

If your child is not feeling well before school, please keep them home and notify the office by phoning 6206 4200 or sending an SMS to 0437 480 486.
