Room 5 and 6 – Santa Visit
In Week 9 on Monday and Thursday, Santa Claus came to visit the very lucky Kindergarten classes!! The Kindy students loved seeing Santa, asking him many questions and giving him their requests for Christmas, ensuring Santa they had been very good this year. Santa gave each student a wrapped book which they thoroughly enjoyed reading afterwards.

RAC Road Safety Incursion
During Week 9 Pre-primary to Year 6 students participated in the RAC Road Safety Incursion. The RAC presenter delivered RAC's Around the Roads program which cover's bicycle, pedestrian and passenger safety for each year group.
Pre-primary students explored road safety by pretending to be a Little Legends Club character. Year 1 students explored Pathways to School by using a large road mat and reinforcing 'stop, look, listen, think' concept. Year 2 students explored a Crash Scene Investigation where students become crash investigators to understand bike, pedestrian and passenger safety. Year 3 students completed The Wheels Go Round workshop about bike safety, safety gear and building a bike. Year 4 students completed the Seatbelt Safety Eggsperiment where students became scientists and used egg crash simulations to learn the importance of seatbelts. Year 5 students explored the Wheel of Consequence workshop, where students developed knowledge about rules and laws in relation to pedestrian, passenger and bicycle safety. Year 6 students completed the Being Green and Being Safe workshop where students learnt about alternative sources of fuel and built a solar-powered car with safety features.
All classes were very engaged with the incursion workshop they completed and have some great road safety skills they can use in the upcoming summer holidays. Be safe everyone!

Room 11 Excursion
Thursday 7th December saw Room 11 enter the City Apple Store to applause and cheering from staff. We were all given an Apple t-shirt (even the adult helpers) to wear and free run of the store to make an Alphabet Movie! The children had a fabulous time and will continue to develop their movie in class this week thanks to their individual ‘thumb drives’. Room 11 would like to thank the parent helpers for their assistance and the wonderful staff at Apple for making our day.

Room 7 and 8
Room 7 and Room 8 had the pleasure of hosting the Week 8 assembly. Throughout the year we have been learning about having a growth mindset and how mistakes help to grow our brains. We also learnt some positive management strategies in Health. Working in small groups, we developed skits that would show our understanding of how to keep on trying and the importance of being supportive of our peers. Some of these skits were performed at the assembly and we talked about what each one meant. To conclude our assembly performance our classes sang Justice Crews’ song, ‘Que Sera’. Our teachers were very proud of our effort and we all enjoyed performing.

Room 7 and 8 have been practising using units of measurement through cooking activities including making shortbread, salt dough and oobleck. We learnt about what a metric cup is and how to measure it accurately. Additionally, we showed the teachers how we could connect this to our understanding of fractions. We learnt about the ASICII Binary Alphabet and made bracelets with pony beads showing our names. Some of us tried some tricky origami and made reindeers. It was great fun.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM MUSIC 2017
I would like to thank all the staff, students and parents of Somerly Primary School for making 2017 a wonderful year in the Music Room.
It has been fabulous watching the students enjoying different types of music as well as growing in confidence when presenting their own ideas. We have such talented students at Somerly Primary School and I am very much looking forward to seeing what 2018 will bring.
The highlights of the year have definitely been seeing the school becoming more confident when doing Community singing at assembly; I hope that 2018 will bring the same volume there as it does in the Music Room. To watch the whole school come together with song and dance is very special!
A huge thank you goes to the dedicated members and participants of the Choir and congratulations on their appearances in such events as the ANZAC Ceremony, NAIDOC Ceremony, WAASCO Annual Conference at the Crown Convention Centre, Parent/Volunteer Morning Tea and Graduation Ceremony.
I would also like to acknowledge all students who have been attending the Ukulele Group at lunch in the final weeks of Term 4, your enthusiasm is infectious and I’m beyond impressed at how far you have come. I also always enjoy our joke about ‘not being picky’ when choosing a guitar pick.
To the Rock Band members in SOUNDSQUAD, I hope we continue to make music in 2018, despite saying farewell to our lead guitarist and singer. I will never forget your first performance with your massive rock medley, you just blew everyone away and you shone so bright that day. Well done!
Looking ahead, 2018 is going to be amazing! With a focus on extending our skills, reading and writing music, utilising ukulele and keyboard to play various songs and continue to grow in the area of Music it is only going to get bigger and better!
Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday!
