Principal’s Report

Dear Parents/Caregivers

Classes for 2018

Staff are in the process of creating class lists for 2018. When creating classes, some of the factors that we take into account include male to female ratio, individual learning styles and learning requirements and student compatibility/ friendship groups.

Rather than at the beginning of the 2018 school year, this year class lists will be placed on the library windows on Wednesday 13th December. Although the lists may change slightly it is hoped that students will be more relaxed returning to school already knowing who their teacher will be.

After lunch on December 13th all students will spend 45 minutes with their 2018 teacher and classmates. Students not returning to Somerly in 2018 will participate in team game activities.

P&C

The final P&C meeting for 2017 will be held on Monday 4th December at 9am in the staffroom. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all P&C members for the wonderful role that they have played in supporting and promoting the school this year.

Nominations for members of the School Council

We are calling for nominations for additional members of the School Council. The School Council has the opportunity to engage in the educational and financial direction of the school. Students Late to School

If your child arrives late to school, they are missing critical morning routines and learning activities. The school day begins at 8:40am and students will be considered late if they do not arrive by this time. If your child arrives after 9:00am you are required to enter through the front office and provide us with a reason for the lateness. A late slip will be printed for you to give to the class teacher.

Not Feeling Well?

If your child is not feeling well before school, please keep them home and notify the office by phoning 9407 7142 or sending an SMS to 0437 480 486.

Late Collection of Students

Somerly Primary School has a student finish time of 2.45pm each day. If your child has not been picked up before 3pm, you will be required to come to the front office to sign them out.

Rugby Tournament

On Friday 17th November the Somerly Rugby team headed south of the river to Beaconsfield for the NRL State Tournament. The team consisted of 13 year 6 boys who have shown strong commitment and motivation throughout the year to training and getting better for this competition.

Somerly was placed in a tough pool with the first game being against Lockridge Primary. It was close, but the boys managed to win 2-1. The next games were against Arbor Grove, Endeavor and Meadow Springs all of which were very strong teams. Somerly held their own in the first half but would then fall behind towards the end of the games. We then versed South Halls Head in a quarter final but lost 2-0.

It was great to see the boys work as a team and different players stepping up to have a go against some fierce competition. Well done boys, you should be proud of your efforts this year!

Year 6 Book Club

Throughout Semester 2, a group of Year 6 students met every Thursday lunchtime for Book Club.

At Book Club, students have shared their favourite novels and made recommendations. One week we shared jokes from a range of joke books and another we listened to funny poems read by Ms Lipman and found some of our own.

Recently everyone committed to reading an historical novel - we then made a concept map of eras, themes, settings and conflicts/problems. Many similarities were found.

Book Club has allowed book lovers to get together with like-minded others, share a love of reading and have some interesting and fun conversations.

Oh and in the tradition of the best Book Clubs we always have a drink and a yummy treat!

Arts Assembly

"WE HEART THE ARTS!

Last Friday, the assembly celebrated the amazing efforts of the Music and Art programs in 2017.

The Art room was open before and after the assembly with various community activities as well as a stunning display of student work.

The assembly featured the Somerly Primary School Choir, the newly formed Ukulele Group as well as two drummers from the Somerly Primary School Rock Band, SOUND SQUAD.

Miss Bartley and Miss Olsen are incredibly proud of the students’ commitment and effort to the arts and are already looking forward to the next 'we heart the arts' assembly."

Many thanks to the parents that joined us to enjoy student art work, music, and participate in community art projects at the Arts assembly and at the Fair Day. We had kind and thoughtful messages written for students from parents, carers and their peers. It is always great for our students to get positive feedback regarding their effort in Art and Music. I appreciated talking to parents about some of their own art pursuits and enjoyed seeing students with their parents and carers having fun in the Art room.

A big thanks to all students for a happy and productive year- I am proud of the effort you have invested in making some interesting and beautiful work.

There are lots of fantastic art activities on around Perth during the holidays.

Check out visitperthcity.com and use the ‘Arts and Entertainment’ filter to find events that may interest you and your family including photography competitions, Black Swan Prize for Portraiture, The Mosaic Exhibition, dinosaur exhibits and ‘Bird Song’- bird illustrations paired with bird songs. Have a fantastic holiday and let me know about all the art you experience and create.
