Congratulations to Miss Mundy who was recently awarded Level 3 Classroom Teacher status. The status acknowledges exemplary teaching, instructional leadership and the continual improvement of professional teaching practice.

Principal’s Lunch

On Wednesday the Administration Team hosted the final Principal’s Lunch for the year. Each teacher was asked to select two students that have consistently demonstrated our school values throughout the year. The selected students were rewarded with a yummy roast dinner, garlic bread and a shortbread biscuit. Congratulations to all the students that attended.

Mayor’s Christmas Appeal

Once again we will be participating in the Mayors Christmas Appeal; all donations will be distributed to those that are less fortunate throughout the community.

Non-perishable food items can be placed in the donation bin, which is located in the front office. We will be accepting donations until Friday 17th November.

Lost Property

There is an overwhelming amount of lost property that has accumulated over the last two terms. Please make the time to come and look for any items your child may have misplaced, as all lost property not claimed by Friday 8th December will be donated accordingly. The lost property is placed outside of the medical room at the rear of the Administration building.

Kindy Enrolment for 2018

If you have a child born between 1 July 2013 and 30 June 2014 please come into the front office for an application form to enrol for Kindergarten in 2018.

As Kindy is non-compulsory, enrolments will be on a first in basis.

When applying we need a copy of your child’s birth certificate or passport, visa if applicable, current Medicare immunisation details and proof of address.

If you know someone who has a child due to start Kindergarten next year, please let them know that enrolments are open.

Students Late to School

If your child arrives late to school, they are missing critical morning routines and learning activities. The school day begins at 8:40am and students will be considered late if they do not arrive by this time. If your child arrives after 9:00am you are required to enter through the front office and provide us with a reason for the lateness. A late slip will be printed for you to give to the class teacher.

Not Feeling Well?

If your child is not feeling well before school, please keep them home and notify the office by phoning 9407 7142 or sending an SMS to 0437 480 486.

Late Collection of Students

Somerly Primary School has a student finish time of 2.45pm each day. If your child has not been picked up before 3pm, you will be required to come to the front office to sign them out.

Learning Focus

Place Value: The ten-ness of ten!

Place Value is one of the key concepts in mathematics and it is essential that students understand the ‘meaning’ of numbers.

For example, in the number 9999, what does each nine mean? Interestingly advertisers use place value to make you spend more! They often leave out the words ‘thousand’ and ‘hundred’ because these are the words that tell us the value of the digit in a number so by leaving these place value words out advertisers can make you think something is inexpensive and value for money! Think about it next time you see an advertisement on TV for a flat screen TV that costs $9999 the advertisers will tell you that it costs ‘just nine, nine, nine, nine’ or ‘ninety nine ninety nine!’ Rather than saying 9 thousand, nine hundred and ninety nine dollars! Watch out for this next time you’re watching TV!!

Place value not only involves learning about the position and value of digits but also how to break numbers up into hundreds, tens and ones or the decomposition of numbers. This understanding helps students with calculations and to understand why and when to regroup ones and tens or “borrow and payback” when using algorithms (‘doing sums’). It is so complex that this understanding is part of the WA Mathematics Curriculum from Year 1 to Year 6!

Here’s what our students need to learn:

Year 1 – Partition (break up) numbers using place value to 100 – group collections up to 100 into tens and ones.

Year 2 – Partition (break up) numbers using place value to 1000 – group collections up to 1000 into hundreds, tens and ones.

Year 3 – Partition (break up) numbers using place value to 10 000 – group collections up to 10 000. Know that 10 000 = 10 thousand=100 hundreds=1000 tens=10 000 ones.

Year 4 – understand that the place value system is built on the multiplication or division of 10.

Year 5 – Understand that the place value system includes decimals - tenths and hundredths.

Year 6 – place value of large numbers using exponents e.g. 1010.

Take a look at our awesome Year 1 students who have been working on their place value understanding using hands on materials including linking blocks, pop sticks, and tens frames!
