Principal’s Report

Dear Parents/Caregivers

Principals Lunch

Last Tuesday the administration team had the pleasure of hosting the 6th Principal’s Lunch for the year. The luncheon recognises the outstanding behaviour of students. All in attendance displayed beautiful manners as they enjoyed a lunch of nacho wraps followed by an icy-pole for dessert. Congratulations to all of the students who were nominated.

Interschool Carnival

I wish to extend congratulations to all our students that recently competed in the Interschool athletics carnival. All students represented the school proudly and demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship at all times.

Socks for S.A.M (Saving Animals Matter)

A reminder that we are raising money for S.A.M this coming Friday by wearing crazy socks to school. If students are participating in the activity they are asked to bring a gold coin donation.

I wish everyone a safe and relaxing break and look forward to seeing students back at school for an exciting term 4. Please note school commences on Tuesday 10th October.

Kindy Enrolment for 2018

Kindergarten enrolments for 2018 are due to close shortly. If you have a child that was born between 1 July 2013 and 30 June 2014 please come into the front office for an application form.

As Kindy is non-compulsory, enrolments will be on a first in basis.

When applying we need a copy of your child’s birth certificate or passport, visa if applicable, current Medicare immunisation details and proof of address.

If you know someone who has a child due to start Kindergarten next year, please let them know that enrolments are open.

Students Late to School

If your child arrives late to school, they are missing critical morning routines and learning activities. The school day begins at 8:40am and students will be considered late if they do not arrive by this time. If your child arrives after 9:00am you are required to enter through the front office and provide us with a reason for the lateness. A late slip will be printed for you to give to the class teacher.

Not Feeling Well?

If your child is not feeling well before school, please keep them home and notify the office by phoning 9407 7142 or sending an SMS to 0437 480 486.

Late Collection of Students

Somerly Primary School has a student finish time of 2.45pm each day. If your child has not been picked up before 3pm, you will be required to come to the front office to sign them out.

UKULELES!

Miss Olsen and the students of Somerly Primary School are very excited for the arrival of 15 new ukuleles for the Music Room! The students have been introduced to chords and transitioning, as well as how to play songs during Term 3 and we are looking forward to having one ukulele per child in Term 4 and in 2018!

LOTE Term 3 2017

This term some students have researched the regional foods of Italy and designed a variety of PowerPoint presentations. The Year 6’s enthusiastically produced posters promoting the Carnivale di Atletica (Athletics Carnival) and they were displayed around the school. A Cultural Club has been initiated where Tiya Sewpal will lead a range of Italian activities.

BLOCK 4

In Block 4 the Year Two’s in Room 16 have been looking at poems. We have been finding the rhyming words at the end of the poetry lines. For our assembly, we recited two funny poems and we liked it when the audience laughed.

In our classroom we have also been learning about mixtures and how they can be separated and combined. Mrs Robinson put together some scientist costumes for us to wear when we were investigating and recording our observations; it makes doing science a lot of fun.

The Big Crunch

On the 11th of September our whole school participated in the Great Vegie Crunch. The Great Vegie Crunch aims to get WA kids eating more vegetables and having fun! With our carrots we all crunched as a school on the count of three. First we just reached an echidna nibble but after three goes we reached a crocodile crunch. We were also very lucky to have a special appearance from the Vegie man! When we reached a crocodile crunch the Vegie man was so impressed he did a dance!! Well done everyone with your great enthusiasm and participation in the Great Vegie Crunch.

Chaplain’s Chat

Hello to all Parents and Carers from Somerly Primary School.

I hope everyone is well and welcoming in Spring and what this season has to offer, especially the flowers and newly born wildlife.

As term 3 comes to an end I thought it may be useful for me to provide you with a list of agencies that may help and assist you and your family if you are currently experiencing hardship or know someone who could use some help from well-established and experienced local agencies.

During the term I have spoken with parents, children and teachers and identified some of the key issues that people were facing in the present moment. These issues included marriage issues, domestic violence, separation issues, drug and alcohol, mental health issues and managing their children’s ‘anger’ and behaviour.

In reflection I have put together the list of agencies for you to access at any time.

Please do not hesitate to get in contact with me during the school term if you have further questions or just simply need a chat or cuppa. My work days are Tuesdays and Fridays.

Take care.
