Principal’s Report
Dear Parents/Caregivers
Faction Sports Carnival
Our 2017 Faction Athletics Carnival was a huge success. Students competed extremely well in both the individual and team events. I would like to thank all staff for the role they played on the day. Furthermore, an extended thank you to Mrs Ochieng for all her hard work leading up to the carnival, making it a smooth and enjoyable experience for our students. Please see below for results and photos.

An Interschool Athletics team has been selected based on students’ individual results; the carnival will be held at Mindarie Primary School this coming Friday 8th September. Families are welcome to attend to support our students.
Fruit ‘n’ Veg Week
To promote the importance of eating more fruit and vegetables we will be celebrating Fruit ‘n’ Veg Week by participating in The Great Aussie Crunch.
Our school is taking part in The Great Aussie Crunch, joining with schools from across Western Australia to simultaneously crunch on fresh vegetables – and have fun doing it!
A guest appearance will be made by Mr Veggie Man as all students attempt to make a loud crunch as they munch like a crocodile on a carrot. The school will provide each student with a carrot for the ‘The Crunch”
Date: Monday 11th
September
Time: 9.00am
Location: Undercover area
Swimming Reminder
In-term swimming is a component of our Health and Physical Education program; we strongly encourage all children to participate. Swimming lessons commence on Monday 11th September through to Friday 22nd September. There are still a few students yet to pay and this must be done as soon as possible as we need to confirm student numbers with the bus company and HBF Joondalup Arena. The cost of the lessons is $50 per student.
Money can be paid either by direct deposit into the school bank account (BSB 066040, ACC 19902052) with your child’s surname as a reference, EFTPOS or through your child’s classroom.
S.A.M - Saving Animals Matters
We wish to send a big thank you to S.A.M for rescuing a lovely cat affectionately known as Snowflake, who had decided to make Room 23 her home. Unfortunately though we were unable to care for Snowflake and S.A.M came to the rescue. S.A.M took Snowflake into care and paid for her to be micro chipped and de-sexed. Snowflake is now waiting to be adopted by her forever family.

All money raised will be donated to S.A.M to assist in the rescue of other pets. For further information on Saving Animals Matters please see the link below.

Father’s Day in Kindergarten
The Kindergarten students treated their Dad's to a wonderful Father's Day afternoon of shaving their face, making a tie, making a footy biscuit, playing lego, painting, reading stories and kicking some balls outside in the sun. All the students had so much fun with their Dad's! Thank you Dad's for taking the time to come in and celebrate Father's Day at school.

Somerly Primary School is taking part in the Vegtember challenge where from the 4th to the 22nd of September students will eat vegetables for crunch and sip each day. A tally will be recorded for how many students eat vegetables each day and the class who has eaten the most vegetables by the end of the term will get to make and drink smoothies on a day next term!
During this time could you please send vegetables for your child to eat at crunch and sip time. This can include sugar snap peas, a whole carrot, cut up capsicum, broccoli florets or celery sticks – there are so many colourful vegetables to choose from!

Learning Focus
Music with Miss Olsen
It has been yet another busy and exciting term in the Music Room.
In class, students have been exploring different instruments through The Instrument of the Week and continuing to learn how to read and play class songs on xylophone and keyboard such as the Addams Family Theme Song, The Imperial March from Star Wars and 7 Years Old. As well as this, the students from Years 1-6 have been participating in a Ukulele Program which will be in full swing in Term 4 with the arrival of 15 new ukuleles for the Music Room.
Outside of the Music Room, the Somerly Primary School Rock Band has been meeting every Monday and Thursday before school, and already have a bank of songs to play! Miss Olsen is incredibly proud of each of the band members and is very much looking forward to their first performance to show the school what they can do.
In Week 6, the Australian Girls’ Choir came to visit Somerly Primary School and ran a workshop and audition which was available to all girls at Somerly Primary School from Pre Primary to Year 6. There was an incredible response with over fifty students in the Music Room. The Australian Girls’ Choir also provide holiday programs available for anyone interested and enthusiastic singers!
In Music this fortnight, the school were focusing on creating and practising chants for their athletics day carnival, using beat, rhythm and rhyme.

Thank You Bunnings - Clarkson
A big thank you goes to Bunnings, Clarkson for their generous donation of plants and paints to our school.
Our plants will be nestling into their new home in our garden where students can appreciate the different look and feel of their foliage. Students will also be learning about how native flowers provide welcome food for birds and bees. The paint will be used for painting designs on a community wall.
Year 5 students pictured here are particularly interested in environmental issues. They are looking forward to caring for the garden and learning more about native plants and animals.
