Woolworths Earn & Learn 2017

Dear Parents

This year we will be participating in the Woolworths Earn & Learn program. Through this program we will be able to get new educational resources for our school and all we need you to do is shop for your groceries at Woolworths.

From Wednesday 26th July to Tuesday 19th September or while stock lasts, we are collecting Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers. You will get one Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker for every $10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco and gift cards). Place the Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker onto a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet and when it’s complete, the Sticker Sheet can be dropped into the Collection Box here at the school or at your local Woolworths.

At the end of the promotion, we’ll be able to get some great new equipment. The range is extensive and offers lots of items ideal for our students – including resources for Maths, English, Science and some fantastic fun supplies for Arts & Craft, Sport and for our library. Pre-Primary Assembly

Congratulations to our Pre-Primary pirates for putting on an amazing assembly for us on our last day of Term 2.

Learning Focus

Maths

Year 1 Coin Detectives!

Welcome back everyone! What an exciting first week of maths it has been at Somerly! During week 1 Year 1 students have been ‘Coin Detectives’ and have really enjoyed using magnifying glasses to take a closer look at money.

The children were being 5 cent coins! (There’s an echidna on it’s back on this coin)

The children were being $2 coins (There is an Aboriginal tribal elder with a long beard on this coin)

There is so much to learn about money and all year levels from Pre-Primary to Year 6 will have a learning focus in Money and Financial Mathematics.

Some of the concepts from Pre-Primary to Year 6 include learning about coins, notes, change, calculating and solving shopping problems, creating financial plans and working out percentage discounts…

I’m sure you’ll agree that there is too much to learn in a year and so the WA Department of Education (SCSA) and Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) identify which parts each year level are to be taught. So for Year 1 students the focus is on being able to recognise, describe and order Australian coins by their value.

The Year 1 teachers have devised some great activities and learning opportunities for money math rotations and the students have been doing:

  • Rubbings of the front and back of the different coins;
  • Using a magnifying glass to look at the different features, words, animals, textures, shapes, sizes and colours;
  • Playing shop;
  • Skip counting, sorting and classifying bags of coins;
  • Investigating the relationship between the value and size of coins;
  • Looking at ways to write dollars and cents;
  • Talking about money in real life;
  • Money from different countries and of course describing the shape, colour, animals and textures of the different coins;
  • Computer Games- view the link below

https://www.moneysmart.gov.au/mst-digital-resources/money-match/index.html

You can try some of these activities at home too!

Remember maths is FUN… NY!

Kindy

At the end of last term in Kindergarten, we completed our first Big Talk. To prepare for the Big Talk we explored the topic of farms and animals throughout Term Two. We did this with the purpose to develop the students’ oral language skills, particularly vocabulary and descriptive language.

The Old MacDonald Farm incursion served as the stimulus that would precede their Big Talk, as well as providing them with a hands-on experience to meet the animals. The task for the Big Talk was for the students to draw a picture of their favourite animal and colour it with dye. They were then asked to talk about the animal they drew which the teacher then scribed.

Attached are some photos of the Old MacDonald Farm incursion and some work samples that are on display in the Kindy classrooms.

Kurlangas Aboriginal Playgroup

This term we will be looking at the numbers 1-5 and the colours red, yellow, blue and green.

We will have coloured playdough, make collages and cellophane windows, do paintings and pasta gluing.

A lot of our work will be based around the “Very Hungry Caterpillar” book.

Please note our new time of 12.30pm-2.30pm. Playgroup is FREE, and held every Wednesday at Somerly Primary School during term times, for Aboriginal children up to 5yrs of age and their carers.

An afternoon tea of fresh fruit is provided for the children, and tea, coffee and biscuits for the adults. You do not need to have a child attending this school to attend.

Hope to see you there!
