Principal’s Report

Dear Parents

Retirement

As the term draws to a close it is with much sadness that the staff and students say goodbye to our wonderful School Officer Mrs Malins. After 27 years of employment with the Department of Education, Mrs Malins has made the decision to retire. Mrs Malins has been a bright light of our front office for the past 9 years, her constant optimism, enthusiasm and willingness to work as a team member has made her an asset to the school. We wish to thank Mrs Malins for everything she has done over the years. She will be deeply missed.

Reports

Reports were emailed to all families on Tuesday 27th June. If you haven’t received your report, please contact the front office on 9407 7142.

Staff Changes

This term we say a fond goodbye to Mrs Sneddon and Mrs MacNicol, as they both commence their maternity leave. Both teachers will be sadly missed by students and staff. We welcome Mrs Nicola Hutchison who is replacing Mrs Sneddon and Miss Avins who is replacing Mrs MacNicol.

Principal’s Lunch

Last Thursday we held lunch for 40 wonderful students. The students were selected by their classroom teacher for their exemplary behaviour and wonderful work ethos.

The students had a feast of sausages, mash potatoes and vegetables.

Scholarship

We wish to congratulate A’Janae Braysher on the tremendous achievement of winning an Art Scholarship to Balcatta Senior High School for 2018. We are immensely proud of you A’Janae.

New Students

I would like to extend a warm welcome to Leigha, Scarlet and Ameer who recently commenced at Somerly Primary School.

End of Term

As the end of Term 2 is almost upon us, I would like to congratulate and thank our staff, students and parents/carers for their outstanding contributions in Semester 1. I would like to wish our school community a happy and restful holiday. We look forward to seeing all students back at school on Tuesday 18th July.

Uniforms

With the mornings now being very chilly, we are encouraging all students to wear their school jacket or jumper to school. A plain black jacket is also acceptable. Please make sure your child’s name is written in them to avoid being put into lost property.

Kindy Enrolment for 2018

We are now taking Kindergarten applications for 2018, if you have a child that was born between 1 July 2013 and 30 June 2014 please come into the front office for an application form.

As Kindy is non-compulsory, enrolments will be on a first in basis.

When applying we need a copy of your child’s birth certificate or passport, visa if applicable, current Medicare immunisation details and proof of address.

If you know someone who has a child due to start Kindergarten next year, please let them know that enrolments are open and will be closing in July.

Students Late to School

If your child arrives late to school, they are missing critical morning routines and learning activities. The school day begins at 8:40am and students will be considered late if they do not arrive by this time. If your child arrives after 9:00am you are required to enter through the front office and provide us with a reason for the lateness. A late slip will be printed for you to give to the class teacher.

Not Feeling Well?

If your child is not feeling well before school, please keep them home and notify the office by phoning 9407 7142 or sending an SMS to 0437 480 486.

Late Collection of Students

Somerly Primary School be required to come to the front office to sign them out.

Road Safety

It has been brought to our attention that students are not using the dedicated crossing area on Connolly Drive when travelling to and from school. Connolly Drive is an extremely busy dual carriageway and our students’ safety is of paramount importance. Please take the time over the holidays to discuss road safety with your children, especially crossing our roads, using the designated traffic wardens who are now available before and after school and keeping to footpaths when arriving at school.

Alkimos Tigers Legends Cup

On Wednesday 21st June, 14 students from Somerly travelled to Amberton Sports Ground to play in the Alkimos Tigers NRL tournament. The Somerly team played with courage and determination against Clarkson, Yanchep District and Yanchep Beach primary schools. Somerly breezed through to the Grand Final which was a hard fought game against Yanchep Beach Primary. Somerly worked hard and as a team which paid off with a 4-2 victory. Somerly will now advance to the NRL State Championship in November where they will meet the top teams from across the metropolitan area.

Wesley College Moorditj Mob

Our students were treated to a visit from the Wesley College Moorditj Mob as part of our NAIDOC celebrations. The Moorditj Mob performed for our students and then students were able to decorate their own boomerangs. The visit was finished off with a whole school final performance.

Thank you to the members of the Wesley College Moorditj Mob for providing an interesting and engaging incursion for our students and staff members.

Learning Focus

What’s been happening in the Music Room?

Term 2 has been incredibly busy with a focus on reading, playing and performing Music, as well as exploring and responding to different styles/genres. It is fantastic to see so many students achieving great things and excited about Music.

The Somerly Primary School Choir has grown considerably since their first performance with now over 35 students between Years 1-6 attending each week. I am incredibly proud of their progress and dedication. In August, the Choir will be representing the school by opening the 2017 WACSSO Conference by singing the Australian National Anthem.

In the final weeks of Term 2, all classes are focusing on celebrating NAIDOC Week by learning how digeridoos are made, making newspaper tapping sticks and learning a very special community song, “Gundulla – We Dance”. I have also been working with the Pre-Primary students who will be singing, “Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” in Noongar at the NAIDOC Ceremony.

I am very much looking forward to Semester 2 and what new adventures it will bring, and continue to give the opportunity for students to participate, grow, extend and enjoy music in and out of the classroom.

LOTE Term 2

The students have all been working on a variety of activities this term. Singing in Italian and dancing to popular Italian songs has been a highlight in the junior classes.

It has been very pleasing to see a marked improvement in Speaking and Listening tasks this term. The students overall confidence has grown and they have enjoyed role-playing different language scenarios with their peers.

ICT is a valuable resource in the learning of Italian as a second language. It has been used throughout the term to consolidate learning and extend language knowledge and skills. Well done to all students!!
