Kindy enrolment for 2017
We are now taking Kindergarten applications for 2017, if you have a child that was born between 1 July 2012 and 30 June 2013 please come into the front office for an application form. As Kindy is non-compulsory, enrolments will be on a first in basis. When applying we need a copy of your child's birth certificate or passport, visa if applicable, current Medicare immunisation details and proof of address.
2017 Enrolments
To assist our planning for 2017 please let the school office know if your children will not be attending Somerly Primary School next year. As you can appreciate with the opening of Catalina, the school will be under pressure to accommodate the growing population and we need as much advanced notification of enrolments as we can to plan for additional classrooms and staff. If you know anyone in the community with school aged children please encourage them to come to the school and enrol early.
Our school is taking part in The Great Aussie Crunch, joining with schools from across Western Australia to simultaneously crunch on fresh vegetables – and have fun doing it! The Great Aussie Crunch is part of Fruit & Veg September, aiming this year to educate students on the importance of eating more vegetables.
When: 8th of September 10.30
am
Where: The undercover area
Each child will be provided with a crunchy apple or carrot.
Parents are very welcome join in! Bring along your own fresh vegetable to crunch on. Maybe a carrot or sugar snap peas, or cut up some capsicum, broccoli, cucumber or celery?
Book Week
Thank you to all the wonderful students and families who bought a book at our Book Fair. As a result of your generosity we got to keep $1500 worth of books for the library which will be appearing on the shelves over the next few weeks.
Our students especially enjoyed sharing some reading time with their grandparents at the Grandparents' Morning Tea. It was a lovely surprise to have so many families attend.
We finished the week with a dress-up day and the students had great fun showing off their beautiful and creative costumes.
A special thank you goes out to Marlee, Jazmin, Tenaya, Imaan, Ella, Zoe and Justin who helped at the Book Fair each day. We couldn't have managed without them. They did a great job.

Year 6 Camp
Wednesday 31st August
The day had finally arrived it was the first day of camp we were so psyched up to get started! Once all of the year 6's arrived in the under-covered area we found out that our bus was going to be delayed due to the bad weather so Mr Gane led all of us into his classroom while we enthusiastically waited for our bus to arrive.
The first thing we did was put our gear into the dorm hall. First the camp manager introduced himself to us, and then we started a simple but enjoyable quiz around the camp. We were a little confused at first, we didn't really get what we were looking for but nonetheless us great warriors conquered our confusion. In the quiz we were using our grammar skills to interpret the hidden meaning and by doing so we learnt a little about the history of Woodman Point.
After that we ate our morning tea then brought our gear into our dorms. We were then split into groups of three. I was in group two and Rojin (BFF) was in group three. Group 1 did 'archery', Group 2 did 'search and rescue' and group 3 did 'rock climbing'.
After we all told the other groups how fun our activities were we all sat down to enjoy our lunch and have some free play (we also did one other group session). It was now time for dinner, Group 1 set up our dinner tables. While we were in the middle of dinner Mr Collie announced that it was Callum's birthday so we all stood up and sang happy birthday to him.
We all finished our dinner which was roast beef/gravy and vegetables we all departed outside and got ready for 'escape from quarantine'. For this activity we were put into groups and had to find some specific items. (Escape from quarantine was great).
Thursday 1st September
We woke up in the morning to a strange rattling noise. Mr Collie was getting everyone up. It was also Rojin's Birthday (wooooooooohoooooo â that was Rojin). Today group 2 and 3 were in charge of setting up all the meals. Group 1, 2 and 3 all participated in some more great activities. Right after we had dinner the year 6's had a mini quiz night. We were told to make groups of six and think of an awesome group name since the winning group name would receive a prize (Rojin's group won with the name 'Mrs West is fantabulous'). We had a series of 6 rounds of 10 questions, we were told to give accurate answers or humorous ones. In the end after some mini games the teachers calculated the scores and the winning team was……………… The Dragonites. After a day filled with fun and games it was officially time for bed.
Friday 2nd September
Once again we were all woken up by a horrible loud noise (to be honest with you it sounded like a preschool with the amount of noise made). All of the dorm rooms got 30 minutes to clean and pack up their belongings. Once we finished we made our way into the dorm hall to put our stuff down, after that we all sat down on the porch (yes including the teachers) to take some awesome group photos. After some chitter-chatter we all grabbed our stuff and all got onto the buses. The bus was taking us to the Freemantle to watch a movie at the cinemas which was; The Secret Life of Pets (it was cool). After all of that we went to a park to have lunch just before we arrived at school.
It was an amazing experience for all the year 6's and we would like to thank all the staff members that helped make this possible!
- An amazing recount produced by Sonia Sewpal and Rojin Zakholy.
Learning Focus
LOTE
This term in LOTE, the students have been focusing on the topic of Hobbies and Sport.
During the Rio Olympics the students were participating in a variety of Italian Olympic activities. This included Olympic News where the children had the opportunity to share their favourite Olympic moments, facts and personal opinions on the events they had seen. Listening & Speaking tasks have involved playing oral games, listening to stories, discussions on favourite sports and role plays. I have been very pleased to see the effort shown by the Year 5/6's when participating in the Sport role-plays.
