Principal’s Report

Dear Parents/Caregivers

Our vision is to foster every individual’s academic and social development driven by high expectations for success and aspirations for them to become resilient, respectful individuals. We want this to happen within a safe, supportive learning environment that caters for the present and developmental needs of every student.

Kaya Families,

Our term is a hype of positive energy with so many exciting things happening in our school during the past couple of weeks and in the weeks ahead.

We celebrated the wonderful achievements of the Matildas, not only their wins but their resilience and determination to always strive to give their very best, celebrating the fact that individuals can aspire to be their best if driven by high expectations for success. The success comes from achieving more than was achieved before, that is what they did and what we hope to foster in all our students.

Last week our Year Six students challenged themselves on camp, two nights and three days without their family’s support, without technology, but with peers and staff to support them to collaborate and face fears to succeed in ways they didn’t believe they could. Thank you to our amazing staff who attended the camp and made it an enjoyable experience for all. Thank you, Mr Robinson and Mrs Caratozzolo, for your organisation and commitment. Thank you, Ms Sanders, Mrs Esson, Mrs Plewright, Mrs Gallagher, Mr Gane, Miss Barnwall and Mrs Elliott, this camp is not possible without your support. 

Our PLP groups and Kindy students enjoyed a visit from some friendly and interesting farm animals. The students had a lovely time seeing and handling animals as part of the learning program. Thank you to Mrs Capes for organising this event for our students and to staff for engaging in this opportunity and learning experience.

We recently celebrated Science Week and the voting for the winners of the science competition will occur this week. Thank you to Mrs Mulder for your organisation and celebrating the amazing world of science with our students. We received several fantastic entries, thank you families for joining in the fun and supporting your child with their inventions. Miss Colleran and I supported Mrs Mulder in judging of the top finalists for the students to vote on to select the winners of each category. This was not an easy task and we needed to strictly adhere to the criteria set out in each category. Thank you for your time and effort they were all amazing. They are on display in the science room if you would like to view them.

As part of Science Week, we participated in the annual Clarkson Challenge, eight of our students visited Clarkson Community High School to compete against two other primary schools. We had two teams, Year Five team - Caleb, Minh, Jai and Tabitha, Year Four team - Amie, Noelia, Braxton and Zoey. These students worked collaboratively to design a product that astronauts could take on their journey. Our teams were acknowledged for their collaborations and inventions, winning second place, Congratulations! Thank you to Mrs Taylor who provided encouragement and support during this challenge.

Book Week is this week! We launched Book Week with our Admin team delivering a rendition of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ to celebrate this year’s theme Read Grow Inspire. Our Book Fair is open throughout this week, please feel welcome to view the books and encourage your child(ren) to read. Staff will be reading books during break times in various locations around the school.  Children will be released from class to spend the afternoon with their grandparents to enjoy our Book Fair, they can read stories together and enjoy some afternoon tea. The big finale is our Book Parade, staff and students dress up to celebrate their favourite book characters and parade them during our assembly, hosted by Rooms 1 & 5.  Please feel welcome to attend the assembly on Friday 25^th at 8:45 am.

Next week, it’s the Jumps and Throws event on Wednesday and our Sports Carnival on Friday. Students have been practicing their skills. Students are encouraged to wear their faction colours on the day. Our P&C are hosting a sausage sizzle on the day, as well as organising a coffee van to be available. We look forward to the day and any support you can offer on the day would be greatly appreciated.

Term 3 Events

Please ensure you stay up to date with your SeeSaw app for posts on events that are occurring during the term.

• Week 8 year 3-6 students will be participating in the Digital Olympics on Thursday 7^th
• Friday 8^th September, please remember to set aside time for our parent interviews. Students finish at 11:45am on Friday for the interviews, please ensure you have planned for your child for this early finishing day. TheirCare will be available if you require childcare for the afternoon.  The bookings link will on at 5pm today and close at 5pm on 6^th September.  Please click on the following link to make your booking.

Students Late to School

If your child arrives late to school, they are missing critical morning routines and learning activities. The school day begins at 8:40am and students will be considered late if they do not arrive by this time. If your child arrives after 9:00am you are required to enter through the front office and provide us with a reason for the lateness. A late slip will be printed for you to give to the class teacher.

Not Feeling Well?

If your child is not feeling well before school, please keep them home and notify the office by phoning 6206 4200, sending an SMS to 0437 480 486 or emailing somerly.ps@education.wa.edu.au.

Late Collection of Students

Somerly Primary School has a student finish time of 2.45pm each day. If your child has not been picked up before 3pm, you will be required to come to the front office to sign them out.

Parent and Child Volunteer Declaration Update

We thank all our parents who generously volunteer their time and energy to support our school community. There are some changes to the Working with Children Check policy, to ensure the safety of children when we have volunteers in the school.

If you would like to volunteer at our school, you will need to sign a ‘Parent and Child Volunteer Declaration Form’. You cannot volunteer if you have a current Working with Children Negative Notice or Interim Negative Notice.

These changes affect parents who are engaged in volunteer work. For example, you are considered a volunteer when you assist with activities such as reading sessions, day excursions, canteen duties, helping at a sports carnival or carrying out P&C duties.

You are not a volunteer when:

• picking up and dropping off your child
• observing events like school assemblies
• attending parent and teacher interviews

If your circumstances change, and you are issued with a Negative Notice or Interim Negative Notice after completing the ‘Parent and child volunteer declaration form’, you must advise the principal.

A current Working with Children Check is required by all other family members and friends over 18 years of age who want to volunteer.

It is a collective responsibility to ensure the safety of our children. We appreciate your ongoing support and dedication to our school community.

Somerly Primary School Book Fair

Kindy Enrolment for 2024

We have limited spaces available in our Kindergarten program for 2024.  If you have a child who was born between 1 July 2019 and 30 June 2020, please complete an Application for Enrolment and return it to the school office as soon as possible.

As Kindy is non-compulsory, enrolments will be on a first in basis.

If you know someone who has a child due to start Kindergarten next year, please let them know that we have limited spaces available.

Barnyard Buddies Incursion

Last week the Barnyard Buddies Farm came to visit the school for our Kindy and PLP students. The students enjoyed feeding and cuddling various animals including rabbits, guinea pigs, goats, chickens and ducks. The animals were adorable, and the weather was perfect for us.
