Principal’s Report
Kaya Families
Our vision is to foster every individual’s academic and social development driven by high expectations for success and aspirations for them to become resilient, respectful individuals.
Our children are getting ready for their sports carnival later in the term, as they are inspired by athletes who show resilience, perseverance and determination competing in the Olympics. Thank you to all those who supported the Australian athletes by wearing green and gold on Friday. We continue to proudly watch and be inspired by our Olympians over the next two weeks.
Our early childhood students and teachers celebrated 100 days of school last Friday. They all enjoyed the celebration, dressing up like they were 100 years old and completing various activities making them 100 days smarter.
Congratulations to the Caramanico family for winning the voluntary contributions payment raffle. The prize is a voucher for Joondalup Resort, kindly donated by Mark Folkard MLA Burns Beach.
P&C
I would like to acknowledge the amazing work that Brie Cutuli has undertaken whilst P&C President this year. Brie was a member of the P&C last year when she successfully reignited our school sausage sizzle, as well as supporting many other fundraising initiatives. This year Brie was elected as President of our P&C, she introduced the formation of subcommittees within the P&C, creating opportunities for individual members of the P&C to follow their passions in supporting our school and the P&C fundraising efforts. Unfortunately, Brie has resigned from the position of President of the P&C, and I would like to publicly thank and acknowledge the energy and time she has given to the P&C whilst President and a member.
The P&C will be meeting on Wednesday 14th August at 6pm in the school staffroom, all are welcome to attend. We hope to see school community members attend to help support our P&C with events that in turn help our children.
Bullying No Way Week
During Week 5 classes will focus on our Good Standing Policy and employing Bullying No Way activities throughout the week.
If your child tells you that they have been bullied, please let your child’s teacher know. Our responses can be much more effective when parents and carers support school staff efforts in responding to situations. Sometimes the word ‘bullying’ is used for behaviours that are not actually bullying, these behaviours can be just as serious and are responded to accordingly. Our PBS Behaviour Policy and Good Standing procedures, assist school staff in maintaining a safe school environment. We do this through restorative practices, working alongside the child and parents.
Science Week
Thank you to Mrs Mulder for organising our science incursions for our Years 1 -6 students. We are thankful for the coin donations, assisting in reducing the cost of the incursion. The WA Wildlife Organisation will provide a unique and exciting way to teach students about the importance of protecting the environment by bringing in a variety of amazing animals, including birds, reptiles, and mammals. Students will learn about the animals themselves, their vital role in our ecosystem, and how we can work together to protect them.
Please log into Consent2Go to give your consent and make payment. Please see the ladies in the front office if you need to make other payment arrangements.
Book Week
Our English Committee is busily planning the events for Book Week. Please note we have decided to celebrate the opening of Book Week with our Book Character Parade on Monday 19th August at 8.45am, you are welcome to attend and dress up if you like. The Book Fair will open on Tuesday 20th August until Friday 23rd August, and our Grandparent’s Afternoon Tea will be on Thursday 22nd August from 2pm. Please RSVP to the front office.

Kids' Health Matters provides trusted advice on common child health concerns from leading Western Australian child health experts.
The series answers the most common questions parents and carers ask on health concerns that matter to them.
It features interviews with a range of passionate experts from across the Child and Adolescent Health Service, Western Australia’s only dedicated health service provider for infants, children and young people. Join them in conversation as they share their expertise and insights on child health, developmental issues and concerns.
Kids Health Matters tackles a range of topics from sleep, to managing food allergies, unpacking the risks of vaping, deep diving into ADHD and looking at strategies to support a young person in your life through depression or a mental health crisis.
The series is hosted by broadcaster Dani Shuey. Perth Children's Hospital Respiratory Consultant Dr Adelaide Withers and CAHS Coordinator of Nursing in Infection Prevention and Control, Danielle Engelbrecht share co-hosting duties.

Behaviour Focus
Our behaviour focus for Week 4 is:-
We are learning to: be safe in the playground by keeping our hands, feet and objects to ourselves.
This is because: everyone is entitled to play safely.
What we will see:
- Students playing in a responsible way
- Rules being followed
- Students using polite and respectful words when speaking to each other
- Students seeking adult support when issues can’t be resolved
- Sports equipment being used correctly
Students Late to School
If your child arrives late to school, they are missing critical morning routines and learning activities. The school day begins at 8:40am and students will be considered late if they do not arrive by this time. If your child arrives after 9:00am you are required to enter through the front office and provide us with a reason for the lateness. A late slip will be printed for you to give to the class teacher.

Book Fair 2024
Dear Parents,
RE: Larrikin Book Fair Tuesday 20th August – Friday 23rd August (inclusive)

100 Days of School
On Friday the Pre-Primary and Year 1 students celebrated 100 Days of School!
The 100th day is an important milestone to mark halfway through the year and to highlight how much our children have learned since their academic year began.
We are so proud of all our little people. We celebrated by bringing collections of 100 in. Across Pre-Primary we had 100 cotton wool balls, M&M’s, popcorn, paperclips, mini ducks, confetti dinosaurs, diamantes, coins, stickers and much more. Students enjoyed counting all the different items during our maths block.
We dressed up as 100-year-olds and wrote responses of ‘what we think life would be like at 100?’The range of responses were unique and thoughtful. Arya wrote, “we won’t have any space left, so we will have cities in the sky with special elevators to get us there”. Tameem wrote, “I will have a cup tea while watching my grandkids and be happy.” Yara wrote, “I will bake a chocolate pie and that her back will hurt, I will feel happy and tired.”
We loved how invested the children were in the experience with some maintaining their elderly character all day. Thank you to all the families for supporting this celebration.
Helping Hand Challenge
Our next challenge is:
We have some great prizes for our students, parents and teachers.
Bring in your 30 containers and receive a ticket to go into the draw for a Family Zoo Pass for 2 adults and 2 children!
To be drawn in week 5 at our Monday morning communications meeting!
We have had some great competition from our ECE Block 1 so everyone please get involved!
So please help us to Save our Planet, Save our Future!
We are the Change!
Somerly Money War
Thank you to everyone who brought in their silver coins for our Money War.
We raised an amazing $458, which has helped to reduce the cost of the Science Week Wildlife incursion happening on the 13th and 14th August.
Congratulations to the winning class, Ms. Lipman's Room 12, who collected a huge 3.3kg of coins.
Well done also to Room 12 who collected 2.7kg of coins and Room 17 who collected 2.1kg.
Somerly Worm Tea
You may be aware that in Term 2 we installed a worm farm. Our students in Kindy and Block 1 have been taking great care of our worms and they are producing so much worm tea. Last term we asked the students Kindy to Year 1 to go in a little art competition to create a label for the worm tea. The winners of this competition were:
Kindy: Reewaj
Pre-Primary: Faith
Year one: Hadley
These students have had their creations made into a label which is on our worm tea bottles and ready for our families to take home. In case you didn't know, worm tea is an amazing organic fertilizer that is jam-packed with nutrients and microorganisms that make any type of plant thrive.
Somerly Primary School will be offering our worm tea to our community at assemblies. For a $5 donation you can take home a bottle of Somerly Worm Tea and help your garden grow.
If you wish to get some, please bring in the correct change and look out for our year six students outside the undercover area at our Friday assemblies.
