Principal’s Report
Dear Parents/Caregivers
Our vision is to foster every individual’s academic and social development driven by high expectations for success and aspirations for them to become resilient, respectful individuals. We want this to happen within a safe, supportive learning environment that caters for the present and developmental needs of every student.
Kaya Families
Well, we are now half way through Term 2 and looking forward to the things ahead. This past week Somerly Primary School was acknowledged by the Containers For Change program who attended our school to video the initiatives we have within our school community. Thank you to all who support this program, either through our school or personally - we are all aiming for the same thing, to look after our environment.
We have Environmental Day coming up in week 8. The theme is ‘Our Land our Future’. We are planning to offer each class a native plant to plant in our garden beds.
We participated in the National Simultaneous Storytime on Wednesday, with the whole school being read the story Bowerbird Blues. Thank you to Mrs Lyn Lawrence for promoting this event and encouraging our students to read for enjoyment and knowledge. Please ask your child what they thought of the book and what they believe the story is about.
We are also encouraging our students to participate in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Parents, please support us with this initiative, your child can record the books they are reading as part of their everyday home readers.
National Sorry Day which falls on the 26th May is a day to acknowledge the strength of the Stolen Generations’ Survivors, and to reflect on how we can all play a part in the healing process for our people and nation. While this date carries great significance for the Stolen Generations and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, it is also commemorated by Australians across country. The week that follows is Reconciliation Week. The theme this year is, “Now More Than Ever’. This reflects in the conversations and actions we have in treaty making, in understanding our nation’s history and in education. We need connection, respect and willingness for change. At Somerly Primary School we will be inviting our school community to wear red, yellow, black, blue or green on Friday 31st May as a sign of respect for our cultural heritage. This could be as simple as a hair tie, socks or t-shirt, we look forward to seeing several staff and students participating in this event.
I’m also excited to announce that we have employed an Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer (AIEO) for the remainder of this term. Nikita Krakouer will be working at Somerly Primary School on Wednesdays. We are confident that she will add value to our cultural responsive team, who are working on developing our Somerly Primary School Reconciliation Action Plan.
Our next class assembly for Term 2 is hosted by Rooms 5 and 6 and will be held on Friday 31st May. We hope you can come along to support our young students with their first assembly.
Behaviour Focus
Our behaviour focus for Week 6 is:-
Whole school responsibility.
We use kind words when speaking with others.
We are learning to sit responsibly in our designated area to eat.
This is because:
- There are Somerly Primary School staff there to watch us and keep us safe.
- There are bins to place our rubbish in.
- We will get to chat with others from our and other classes.

Students Late to School
If your child arrives late to school, they are missing critical morning routines and learning activities. The school day begins at 8:40am and students will be considered late if they do not arrive by this time. If your child arrives after 9:00am you are required to enter through the front office and provide us with a reason for the lateness. A late slip will be printed for you to give to the class teacher.
Not Feeling Well?
If your child is not feeling well before school, please keep them home and notify the office by phoning 6206 4200, sending an SMS to 0437 480 486 or emailing somerly.ps@education.wa.edu.au.
Late Collection of Students
Somerly Primary School has a student finish time of 2.45pm each day. If your child has not been picked up before 3pm, you will be required to come to the front office to sign them out.
Year 1 Dreamtime Story Session
During week 5, our Year 1 students enjoyed a story session with one our P&C members, Janelle.
Room 2 - Pre-Primary Mother’s Day Celebration
Last week we celebrated our lovely Pre-Primary Mama's/Special persons.
Our Room 2 Pre-Primary students showed the love by pampering their special people with a peppermint sugar hand scrub, painting their portraits, making beaded bracelets and enjoying a lovely story together.
Cross Country Event – Student Report
Somerly Primary School’s Cross Country – Written by KALIA B, LILLY G
Somerly p.s came on a bus to compete against Kinross, Quinns rocks, Beaumaris, Mindarie and Burns beach at Quinns rocks primary school from years 3-6. 5 people got selected to go to cross country from each year. Year 3s did 1 km and did great. Years 4 and 5 did 1.5 km and best of all Ava K came 1st against other year 5s! year 6s did 2 km and did the best that they could do to get points for there school, our school tried very hard and were supporting other schools. Before anyone ran we put zinc on all of us to represent our school, we did a fun warm up with Miss Ochieng to get our blood pumping. Whatever place we got determined how many points we got for school. It was a blast and we cheered everyone on. Premier’s Reading Challenge
Embark on an epic reading journey and be in the running to win weekly prizes in the 2024 Premier's Reading Challenge.
About the challenge
The Premier’s Reading Challenge is a literacy engagement program established in 2022 to:
- encourage students to read more books.
- enjoy reading.
- improve literacy levels.
The mission is for students in kindergarten to Year 10 to read 12 books over 4 months from 6 May to 6 September. That’s right—just 12! Students can read:
- books
- short stories
- graphic novels
- eBooks
- talking books
- Audiobooks
- Poems
- anything that sparks their interest and gets them reading
Whether they’re a curious kindergartener or a high schooler, there is something of interest for readers at any and every level. Students will expand their vocabulary, learn new facts, and impress their friends with fancy new words that they have learned.
At the end of the challenge, students who complete it will receive a special certificate signed by the Premier. They can hang it proudly on their bedroom wall; it’s like winning a gold medal in reading!
Get your children ready to explore, grab their reading lights and bookmarks and set sail on their next reading adventure. The next great story is only one page turn away!

2024 P&C Day WA
We’re celebrating P&C Day WA on Friday 24 May
Did you know that at last count, on average WA P&Cs donated an estimated total of almost $12 million and nearly 500,000 volunteer hours each year to Western Australian school communities?
WA P&Cs work tirelessly on initiatives that benefit children at public schools. P&Cs are involved in many activities, from facilitating parent participation and involvement in the school, to acting as a forum for parents to discuss school issues and providing resources to the school via fundraising.
Each year, we pause to celebrate and acknowledge the magnificent contributions of our P&C Associations; this year, P&C Day WA will be / was celebrated on Friday 24 May.
We’re celebrating our P&C by providing a morning tea for our P&C members.
We encourage those interested in P&Cs to visit the WACSSO website (www.wacsso.wa.edu.au) to find out more about the work they do.
Term 2 Fathering Project Event
School Board
Hi everyone
I have a daughter in kindy and a son in Year 1 at Somerly Primary School. I've been a member of the P&C for the past three years, and this year I joined the board for the first time. After years of wanting to be more involved, I finally joined the board because I enjoy learning about the ways our amazing school is run and am excited to be part of the team that helps guide important decisions for our school community.
I am particularly interested in developing more sustainable initiatives, nurturing our neurodiverse students, and helping the next generation grow their respect and awareness of Indigenous history and culture. I am committed to helping Somerly Primary School strive to be a welcoming and inclusive place for all children to learn, grow, and build friendships.
